Check for 12Vdc at the bulb socket. If its there the bulb is bad, the socket is bad (making no/poor contact with the bulb), or you have a bad ground. If its not there, trace the circuit back until you find 12V the break in the circuit will be between the last 2 point you checked.
The most common reason for a failure in the center stop light is a broken wire in the harness that goes from the body to the hatch. Pull the rubber "bellows" away from the harness and you might be able to spot the problem. Sometimes flexing the harness will make it obvious which wire is broken (it'll want to bend sharply at the bad spot).
