The most common reason for a failure in the center stop light is a broken wire in the harness that goes from the body to the hatch. Pull the rubber "bellows" away from the harness and you might be able to spot the problem. Sometimes flexing the harness will make it obvious which wire is broken (it'll want to bend sharply at the bad spot).

Check for 12Vdc at the bulb socket. If its there the bulb is bad, the socket is bad (making no/poor contact with the bulb), or you have a bad ground. If its not there, trace the circuit back until you find 12V the break in the circuit will be between the last 2 point you checked.

Brake lights dont work on my 2001 volvo s80. All fuses and relays are good. The bulbs are good too. The third brake light and parking lights work too. Turn dignals are fine too. Whats my problem?

Sounds like the brake switch on floor under brake pedal, needs adjusting or its bad. When you put on the brakes, it sends power to rear stop lights. The pedal hits this switch. Good-Day! ( if all else is good )

Tail lights work but not brake lights 93 toyota camry

The brake light side of the bulbs is powered by the brake switch and travels thru the turn signal switch.
If the third brake light works, I would guess the problem is in the turn signal switch.

Brake light switch. If I remember correctly, the third brake light works off a seperate circuit from the other brake lights so part of the switch could be bad.

My third brake light works, bottome two do not work. I put new bulbs, new sl switch, and checked all fuses, but bottom brake lights are still not working, there are a green, brown, and black wire running...

Work the 4-way flasher switch rapidly in and out several times. It sounds like the combination switch is corroded. 80% of the time you can clear it by working the 4-way switch (may have to use electronic contact cleaner sprayed into switch as well). The brake lights run through the combination switch (turn signal/wiper switch) to the rear bulbs but the third brake light is fed before the switch.

Check your wires, the smoke could mean an electrical fire.
