First, block the front wheels, loosen the rear lug nuts, then jack up the rear wheels. Use jackstands to support the car -- not the jack! Find the proper location for the jackstands and make sure they are securely supporting the car.
Next, remove any factory drum retainer clips from the lug studs. You will likely have to destroy them, but don't worry because they're unnecessary.
Next, use a block of wood with a hammer to firmly tap around the drum -- always use a block of wood unless you use a special "dead blow" hammer. This action loosens rust between the drum and the lug studs, which may allow the drum to be removed.
If the drum still will not pull off, loosen the brake shoes with a special brake tool, sometimes called a "brake spoon," which is available at your auto parts store. You may need to remove a rubber weather plug to access the brake adjuster star wheel through the backing plate. Rotate the adjuster wheel just enough to remove the drum. (You'll know pretty quickly if you are tightening or loosening it.) If the drum is worn, there may be a "lip" around the outer edge, which is an area that does not come in contact with the brake shoes.
Upon removal, take the drums (both of them) to a brake shop. The shop will determine if they can be turned and reused by measuring the inside diameter of the worn area with calipers. There should be a maximum allowable measurement stamped or embossed on the outside of the drum. Don't be surprised if you need new drums, as they don't have as much metal as they used to. If they can be turned and reused, consider yourself lucky, and be sure to replace the brake shoes.

I'm working on an 87 samurai. I'm trying to remove the rear brake drum. There are 6 screws that appear to be holding a metal band around the brake drum. Do those screws need to be removed

I don't know but what you seem to be describing is a trim to make the brake drum look better as it can probably be seen through the wheel.

It should not be necessary to remove this in order to remove the drum - mostly what prevents the removal of a brake drum is a wear and corrosion ridge at the edge of the inside (braking area) and the brake shoes adjust behind the ridge.
Prior to the removal of the drum the brake shoe adjuster must be backed off or deactivated. Doing this usually means releasing the parking brake cable and then working through whatever hole is provided either in the backplate or drum.

Remove rear brake drums

Light Duty Models
  1. Raise the vehicle so that the wheel to be worked on is clear of the floor and install jackstands under the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel. Remove the three retaining nuts and remove the brake drum. It may be necessary to back off the brake shoe adjustment in order to remove the brake drum. This is because the drum might be grooved or worn from being in service for an extended period of time.
  3. Before installing a new brake drum, be sure to remove any protective coating with brake cleaner or a suitable fast-drying degreaser.
  4. Install the brake drum in the reverse order of removal and adjust the brakes.

Heavy Duty
  1. Raise the vehicle and install jackstands.
  2. Remove the wheel. Loosen the rear brake shoe adjustment.
  3. Remove the rear axle retaining bolts and lockwashers, axle shaft, and gasket.
  4. Remove the wheel bearing locknut, lockwasher, and adjusting nut.
  5. Remove the hub and drum assembly from the axle.
  6. Remove the brake drum-to-hub retaining screws, bolts or bolts and nut. Remove the brake drum from the hub.

To install:

  1. Place the drum on the hub and attach it to the hub with the attaching nuts and bolts.
  2. Place the hub and drum assembly on the axle and start the adjusting nut.
  3. Adjust the wheel bearing nut and install the wheel bearing lockwasher and locknut.
  4. Install the axle shaft with a new gasket and install the axle retaining bolts and lockwashers.
  5. Install the wheel and adjust the brake shoes. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.

How do I get rear brake drum off?

You should jack up securely the rear end, and then remove the lugnuts to the wheels and remove the wheel.

Then, you may need a heavy hammer to tap on the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions of the rear brake drum to loosen it up.

How do you remove the rear brake drums

  1. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
    1. One way to remove the drum is to tap the drum lightly with a mallet to free the drum if resistance is felt. Sometimes brake drums are stubborn. If the drum is difficult to remove, perform the following:
    1. Insert the end of a bent wire (a coat hanger will do nicely) through the hole in the brake drum and hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjuster.
    2. Reduce the brake shoe adjustment by turning the adjuster bolt with a brake adjuster tool. The drum should now be loose enough to remove without much effort.

The Brake Adjustment can be access on Rear of the BackPlate !

here is a diagram on how to remove your brake drum. please do not forget to rate and comment about your experience with fixya today.

    Removal & Installation
CAUTION Dust and dirt accumulating on brake parts during normal use may contain asbestos fibers from production or aftermarket brake linings. Breathing excessive concentrations of asbestos fibers can cause serious bodily harm. Exercise care when servicing brake parts. Do not sand or grind brake lining unless equipment used is designed to contain the dust residue. Do not clean brake parts with compressed air or by dry brushing. Cleaning should be done by dampening the brake components with a fine mist of water, then wiping the brake components clean with a dampened cloth. Dispose of cloth and all residue containing asbestos fibers in an impermeable container with the appropriate label. Follow practices prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the handling, processing, and disposing of dust or debris that may contain asbestos fibers.

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

CAUTION Use of a brake drum puller or a torch is not recommended. Brake drum distortion can result.

NOTE If the brake drum is rusted to the axle shaft pilot diameter, tap the center of the brake drum between the wheel studs.
    3. Remove the brake drum.
    4. If equipped, remove the brake drum retaining clips.
    5. If the brake drums will not come off, follow these steps.
    6. Move the brake shoe adjusting lever off the brake adjuster screw.
    7. Loosen the brake shoe adjuster screw nut by adjusting the nut upward.
    8. Using the special tool, 134-R0191, measure the brake drum inside diameter.
    9. Install a new brake drum if the maximum inside diameter exceeds the specification shown on the outside of the brake drum.

    To install:

WARNING Whenever a wheel is installed, always remove any corrosion, dirt or foreign material present on the mounting surfaces of the wheel or the surface of the wheel hub, brake drum or brake disc that contacts the wheel. Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheel mounting surfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to come off while the vehicle is in motion, causing loss of control. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

    1. Clean the wheel hub mounting surface and wheel pilot.
    2. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
