Not low input sensor...P0117 KIA - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Low Input
Possible causes Low engine coolant level Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor Faulty engine coolant thermostat Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness is open or shorted Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit poor electrical connection
The coolant temperature sensor is a thermistor mounted in the engine
coolant stream. A thermistor is an electrical device that varies its
resistance in relation to changes in temperature.
For 2.5L engines, the coolant temperature sensor is located on the left side of the cylinder head.
For
MFI engines, the coolant temperature sensor is located on the intake
manifold water jacket or near (or on) the thermostat housing.

On a V8 there are two sensors, the are located on either side of the
neck where the thermostat is located. Standing in front of the vehicle
the one on the left is for the temp. guage, the one on the right is for
the computer.
If it is the six cylinder and you're getting the "COOLANT SENSOR BAD"
message on the VIC that refers to the level sensor in the header tank. Is
common in this models, I have one '93 ZJ and my signal Sensor Coolant
Level also is ON for long time; first, try to clean the plug and reset
the ECU. If the signal show again, maybe you need replace this sensor. For more details about location and diagnotics, check this documents: ZJ-Secc-8D-Ignition-Systems - Page 5 Location (Coolant Temperature Sensor) - Page 11 Diagnostics/Service Procedures - Page 24 Removal Components
in the 5.2L V8 engine the coolant sensor is located on top of the engine. Locate the coolant thick hose coming from top of the ratiator to the top of the engine. Look at the place such hose connects to the engine you wont miss the sensor it is about one inch from there.
Thermostat location in 5 cil. engines, temp sensor is located just right or upper arrow in picture. I've included a picture of temp sensor and installation instruccions.
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
Drain the engine coolant.
Disconnect the ground cable of battery.
Remove the electrical connector from the sensor.
Remove the coolant temperature sensor.
