This is an intermitten problem, I have had the battery replaced, as well as the starter. Sometimes she will not crank when I turn the key, all lights on the dash are on. I turn the key back to off, sometimes she will start with the next turn of the key, sometimes it take two or three turns to get it to crank over. I was told at one time to pump the brake peddle to signal the starter I was going to start the car, as well as fully depress the clutch a few times. It only does this every so often. She has 137K on her, runs great otherwise, don't want to get rid of her. 1994 Toyota Camry
Same problem but w./a automatic. I was told that the gear shift needs to be in a certain spot to start. So every time this happens we play w/the gear shift. I have no idea if it actually helps. It can start on the 1st try or take 15 tries. I've looked all over the net trying to find a solution - you are the 1st person I've found w/this problem. Please let us know what fixed it. You just need replace the starter solenoid my friend. That's your only problem. The solenoid is clicking, but not putting power to its other side that runs power to the starter.
What is model year? Sometimes when you replace engine you may need the computer from donor vehicle as well? Any testing at starter motor make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set.
Make sure battery has a full charge and connections all good? You can turn crank by hand, correct? The engine isn't seized? The starter motor usually has two voltage circuits, one comes from the battery, hot all the time. The other circuit goes hot with key in the crank position and may be wired through the neutral switch for automatic tranny. The starter motor usually grounds through engine block. So, grounds are important.
You can take starter motor off, lay it on the ground, hook up jumper cables properly from charged battery to starter motor, at the least, it should kick out drive gear and spin.
Check and make sure your battery is fully charged. If so, I would check and make sure your are getting the signal to the starter when the key is in the crank position. If you are getting power to the starter solenoid when they key is in the crank position I would have the starter checked and probably replaced. If you do not get power to the solenoid when the key is in the crank position I would look to possibly an ignition switch, wiring and connectors, or fuses or fuseable links.
Do the dash lites come on when you turn the key on? Are you saying the starter doesn't crank?
I'd have to be sure the battery has a full charge and battery connections all clean and tight.
The starter has two voltage circuits, one is hot all the time, the other circuit, sometimes called the starter s terminal, goes hot with the key in the crank position and is wired through neutral switch, if auto tranny. Did you try cranking it in neutral?
wont crank or wont start.?? no car starts , if it cant crank. (unless push starter (M/T magic) that is not a trans sensor its the PRN switch. ill answer for, wont CRANK ! it wont crank even with a good battery (charged) or jump started. 1: bad start 2: bad wires to same. so hot wire the starter small wire, the key start line is tiny. cranks. , starter good, no crank starter bad or cables bad. if it cranks hot wired, then the key line is dead. easy, huh?
Either there is a bad or dirty battery connection which is allowing the lights but no crank or you could have dirty or loose starter wires or starter relay may be bad or ignition is a possibility. All these can be tested with an ohmmeter for power. I would start with connections
verify that you have a fully charge battery and that you have the same amount of voltage at the battery as at the starter when the key is turned to the start position. If not repair fault at positive cable either at battery or at starter. If voltage checks good. Use a remote starter and turn key to the on position and try to crank over engine with remote starter. if engine cranks over. You have a defective starter solenoid and starter must be replaced.
