The first thing I would do is to go and get the service light checked out. You can go up to an auto parts store (Autozone, Advance Auto Parts, or O'Reilly's) and they can scan your truck's computer for the trouble codes. This can really help in shedding some light on why your engine is idling roughly, although sometimes a rough idle can be caused by little things like bad fuel or needing a tuneup. As far as your brakes go, it is a good thing that your brakes stop your truck quickly. It is when your brakes slowly stop your truck, you should start to worry. Just adjust how much pressure you apply to your brake pedal.
Your best bet would be to take it to Auto-Zone and have them read the code/s for you. It is a free service and can help lead you in the right direction. You can look at your gas cap, it can cause a rough idle and turn cause an engine code. Let me know how you make out.
i would first change the fuel filter with it being run low in fuel it may have picked up some trash off the bottom of the tank so change the fuel filter and see if it runs better
the check engine light means that a code has been set. the code will reference a faulty system that must be diagnosed and repaired. sorry for the vagueness, but there are e gads of codes that can cause the rough idling
most aftermarket parts places will scan the car for free. this will give you an idea of where to start.
