You drove with a flashing check engine light and then with it on solid. Flashing check engine light means STOP DRIVING and get it fixed. So this sounds like an abused and neglected car to me. Get the trouble codes read that are stored in the computer. Check for good fuel pressure and spark. Fix one or both.
change mechanics --or bring back and have them fix correctly when they did the engine work doesnt sound like was done correctly and now you may have a bigger problem
Find out if Midas use a genuine sensor or an after market unit. A cpu is set to read the parameters of a genuine unit and after market units while they work have the parameters set so that the cpu sees them as faulty and will put the engine light on.. Suggest you take it to a dealer for a correct fault reading and diognosis of the problem.
It sounds like a sensor is intermittantly loosing the data stream. Since the engine light came on, I would go to a reputable shop and have them check for codes. Many auto parts stores will do this as well and sometimes for free. Can't beet free. If I were to guess I would say something like the camshaft postion sensor is going bad, Or the crankshaft postion sensor, Or something like that. The code will tell which one it is.
Good luck, and if you have any further questions please....ask!
Take it back to the place you had the work done and make them fix it ... document what you have done. Your engine may have been damaged due to this error during a tune up. Pleas do not mention the name of the places which have done work on your vehicle. DO document what was and is being done.
Running rough and misfiring is usually a one or more bad spark plug wires. Don't go back to that dealer. Replace the wires or have your mechanic do it for you. If you replace them, take one off at a time and install the new one. If you put the wires back on in the wrong order, it will misfire.
I'm having same problem on my 2000 model rodeo 4wd 3.2L V6. Other day check engine light came on. I checked engine bay nothing abnormal, or power loss. Next day light was gone. 2 days later driving, a sudden loss of power and light came up. After idling for a couple of minutes, drove off with light still on but all power back. 1 hour later of faultless driving loss of power for a minute or so. Engine temp normal. Had break for 1/2 hour and set off for last hour of journey without fault except check engine light still on. Following dayon startup light went out???

sometimes when the gas cap gets left off, it sets a code and turns on the check engine light. if the problem returns, it very well could be the egr valve....they tend to have a build up of carbon in the valve and can stick open.this problem can cause a rough idle, hesitation and stalling. you can remove the valve and use a screwdriver , with a torx bit i think, and turn the inside of the valve to break up the carbon deposits...should fix it, but with no code its hard to tell exactly what the problem is.
The first thing i would check into is the coil packs. If it sounds like a missfire (hard to hear on a small 4 cylinder). Also it sounds odd but the engine sometimes has an ignition fuse. If that fuse is blown there is a power wire short somewhere in the wiring harness. Also if the check engine light is on the gas consumption may be the O2 sensor. I have had sensors last for as little as 200 miles before on my truck. This dropped my mileage from 21 to 4 mpg.
