I think you can do it by starting at the back. Remove the U-Bolts that attaches the universal to the third member (rear end). Slide the drive shaft forward, down and then back. Be careful not to let the caps fall off the universal. Those needle bearing are a pain to reinstall. It's best to rap tape around the universal until you're ready to reinstall the drive shaft. You should be able to unbolt the carrier bearing now and slide the front of the shaft out of the tail of the transmission. Simple, huh? Good luck! Hope I helped some.

Take it to a machine shop.

Yes, but you will need to mark the yoke position and exact number of turns to remove the nut or you will change ring and pinion gear lash setting when re-installing it. You can use a large pipe wrench to hold the yoke still while tightening, or get a special tool made for that.
SOURCE: Remove the Center Support Drive Shaft Bearings
use a cutting wheel and cut through the bearing as far as you can without damaging the drive shaft. Then get a big hammer and a chisel drive the chisel into the cut and break the bearing.

remove the rear shaft from a 1990 full size gmc van (g-van) make sure the one you select has the scew on sleeve at the front of the rear section of the shaft
this will be the right lenght
take the rear yolk off your old shaft cut of the ball socket now get the same u-joint your truck calls for and mount the rear yolk (the section of the shaft that bolts to your rear end) to the new shaft
this works ive done it
you eliminate 2 of the 4 u-joints and lighten up your shaft this releives strain on you tranny and rear end when these u-joints and ball bearings fail they cause the vibrations which ruin the rest of your drive train also you gain 10hp
i spent 300 bucks rebuilding the OEM shaft and got no where so for 25 bucks i did this
SOURCE: need to replace driveshaft carrier bearing, will not come off transmission end.
First mark the relationship of the two yokes and then remove the universal joint. Now that's done remove the retainer clip from the top of the slip yoke and gently tap the slip yoke out being careful not to damage the splines on the shaft. the bearing that ins on there is pressed in so (A) you can bring it to someone with a press or (B) use a gear/ pulley puller. If you attempt this take your time and have patience don't break anything and think safety first.
