I would try doing a transmission service first. I had the same problem with mine, but it was shifting in and out of overdrive. They seem to have a shift problems when the fluid get dirty. Don't need to do a flush. Just drop the bottom pan and drain the fluid and reinstall the pan with new gasket and add fluid. It's very cheap and could take care of your problem. And as a side note the torque converter wouldn't cause the overdrive problem. A torq converter is like a clutch in a manual transmission. So if you have a torq converter problem it would cause more than just a overdrive problem

Overdrive Control Switch
The overdrive control switch is located in the instrument
panel. In the On position, automatic shifts
into fourth gear overdrive will occur. In the Off position,
the switch overrides the powertrain control module
preventing a shift to overdrive fourth gear range.
The switch has an indicator light that illuminates
when overdrive is turned off. The switch also resets
when the ignition key is turned to the OFF position
so that the automatic overdrive feature is restored.
The use of fault codes is employed to help diagnose
the electronic components that operate the overdrive
unit and torque converter clutch.

1990 f150 automatic with overdrive shifts only at high rpms

Kinda sounds like it works when fluid is thick and not after it warms up. If it has been awhile since trans fluid and filter were changed it is the most simple thing to change. The torque converter is a big pump, it may be going and not providing enough pressure. This could be checked on most transmissions by a shop expert. Sometimes pressure can be adjusted externally.

I would say torque converter but there are a few thing that control a torque converter the torque on off solenoid switch the valve body in the bottom of the pan where the filter is. The fourth gear shift accumulator. I would start with changing the fluid and filter first and get the system flushed first.

Torque converter is probraly going bad, the automatic gear selector having trouble seeking or going into another gear unless high rpm to select it out to another gear. Could also be your 1gear is getting bad. you may need to take it to the shop as in the long term, it can damage more. You could check to see if fluid is up to level too, as this does happen when it's low in transmission fluid.

Car pulsates when shifting into overdrive.

Need to verify if its overdrive or the torque converter locking up. If its when it engages overdrive these transmissions are noted for the 4th clutch hub splines stripping out and 4th clutches slipping, Need to verify. Have vehicle checked for trans codes, a code P1811-long shift, max. adapt could be many things. If it just when the torque converter locks up it could be the converter itself or an EPC solenoid sticking especially with a P1811 code. Either way it is proablly handled best by a professional.

Hi, my 1995 Galant wont shift to overdrive. I

Boy O Boy, Don't throw that old trans away, It is most likely OK. Did you change the filter and fluid. A bad speed sensor or a bad torque converter lock-up solenoid will result in a loss of overdrive function. Perform an OBDII scan of the stored faults And look for Speed sensor and lock-up solenoid faults. Watch out for those shops, they will skin you.

Code P1740

i think you answered your own question.. torque converter clutch or overdrive solenoid. also your overdrive band could be a little worn and about ready to **** the bed for good but i'd check the other things. if you had transmission work done on it before when they put the torque converter on maybe it didn't get re-seated properly. push and turn it will click do it 2 more times clicking a total of 3 times

First thing,

lets start with a transmission flush and filter change. then have you checked any of your vacume lines. A bad vacume line is the number one thing that causes any form of transmission mis shifting. When it gets warmed up the lines alow cracks to open up and mess up the function of the vacume line. Also you need to have the torque converter checked. You also need to have a computer scan on the vehicle. a bad sensor or coputer could cause any of these problems.

let me know what happens when you check these out.
