Check your transmission fluid for color (not brown) and scent (not burned).
If either is present, it may be time for a rebuild.
You have a sprag (over running one way clutch) that is not working properly, or a support bearing that is shot and causing one clutch to put preasure on another and trying to engage it also

Try replacing your fluid filter in your transmission first. If that does not work, your tranny could have the gears wearing out. To solve the shifting problem, have a shift kit put in your transmission.
Assuming this is an automatic transmission, odds are you have lost a band in your transmission, this will require a rebuild, you may also notice it will fail to shift into high gear as well?

For the steering problem first at all check it the fluid level.
For the Transmission, if you recently replaced the fluid this MUST BE a ATF+3. Never use others like Dexron or Mercon. So, first, let me know what kind of fluid you put on in.
