Yes, a vehicle's fuel pump can be used to empty the fuel tank. Here's how to do it: disconnect a fuel supply line, place it into a fuel-safe container, remove the fuel pump relay, install a jumper wire from the 12 volt cavity to the fuel pump control cavity and turn on the ignition key. If the fuel pump is operational, fuel should be flowing. If the fuel pump is not operational, tapping on the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber mallet may cause the faulty fuel pump to work temporarily. It's important to note that when all of the fuel has been transferred out of the tank, the fuel pump will still be running due to the jumper-wire; this could potentially damage the pump so the wire should be removed as soon as fuel stops flowing. If the tank is being drained for fuel pump replacement, damaging the old fuel pump isn't as big of a concern. Alternatively if the fuel pump is OK and the tank is being drained to access an evaporative emission line, then great care should be taken in order to prevent fuel pump damage. Two items to check. The crankshaft sensor will reduce fuel pump pressure if it miscounts the RPM. The plastic strainer in the fuel tank can break apart and clog the pump intake in the tank. When the engine quits, the fuel pump is stopped and the loose particles are returned to the tank bottom.
In either case, try checking the fuel pressure at the test tap on the fuelrail.
Yes, certainly sounds like a fuel pump issue, very common issue. Yes, you have to drop the tank for access..... Be safe, fumes are extremely flammable.
If you can rap the fuel tank on the bottom and the car starts, it's almost a guarantee that it's your fuel pump.
You have to get it replaced. Your luck at the little rapping trick runs out after awhile.
Could be low fuel pressure and now no pressure. Fuel pump could be bad. Need to check fuel pressure. We use a trick to test it sometimes .While someone cranks over the engine , with a hammer firmly TAP bottom center of fuel tank, it jars pump and might start, does not fix it but lets you know if it is bad.
Hi
Turn key on a listen for fuel pump running in tank. The fuel pump should run for 3 to 4 seconds and kick out. If not running try tapping bottom of tank with a soft hammer and fuel pump might start working but if this is the problem it will have to be replaced.
