Can be over 50things.
tune up's skipped is #1 cause on earth, egr stuck open. (if it has one, mine didnt on my 4.0L (x3)) no engine stated, so i guess at parts, due to that.
the 1997 any scan tool on earth works, on it.
if the scan tool shows DTC errors just before the ASD drops
bingo, no more guessing.!
does the ASD relay drop just before the stall?
low idle means misfiring, and the endless list for that.
air leaks cause faster idle on all map speed density systems, like this. so its not vacuum leaks, but can be stuck closed ISC valve, staving idle air. sure.

usa answers not export.

Possibly bad compressor, worn bearings in a pulley or lines TO compressor. Also, perhaps wrong refrigerant added. Sometimes it makes a difference as there are some 7 different kinds.

My 1998 Volkswagen Beetle keeps dying.

With the car running rough it could cause the harsh shift but if it is staying at 5000 rpms then the ****** is about to go out on you. The rough idle sounds like a vacuum leak. If you can keep the car running at idle listen for a sucking type sound. That would indicate where the vacuum leak is.
