My '95 Chrysler lebaron has recently started not wanting to shift into its upper gears I will hit 45-50 at max and stay there... I have pulled it over numerous time turned it off and restarted it, it still has not fixed itself. It lightly jerks like it wants to go into the next gear but something is stopping it. I don't know what is causing it to stay in the first gear and why it is not shifting over. I appreciate any and all opinions and advice.

sounds like your shift cable was freezing up and finally snapped. check the trans shifter side and see if you can move it if so then this is problem. your car runs a cable not rods. if you pop the center console out you will get a better view there is one or two screws at back of console in cupholders and it should come out
SOURCE: Transmission jerks
One possibility is that the speed sensor is going out. When that happens the computer gets bad information and thus makes bad decisions. When the car goes into 2nd all of the solenoids are actually off. That is so if there is some kind of problem the transmission gets no power, then it still has P, R, N, 2nd. It would be kind of weird, maybe, to see only the 1-2 shift being affected but I can't really think of anything else that could cause that kind of problem.

Sounds like the shift cable is coming apart inside. You will need to disconnect it at both ends and make sure it slides easily. if not, change it. If you are good with mechanical things and have a bit of patience it's not too hard. If not let a shop do it.

Sorry but if your reverse is having trouble you will probably have to replace or rebuild tranny like me. Otherwise try new filter and fluid first.

ITS NOT THE SAFETY SWITCH ON BAKE PEDAL,WENT THRU SAME THING, HUSBAND TOOK IT APART, AND THE SPRING WAS BROKEN. THE SPRING IS PART OF THE BRIGHT PINK SAFETY SWITCH, EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT. IT KEEPS PRESSURE ON IT, SO WHEN ITS PRESSED IT RELEASES IT. WE OWN A 2006 CHRYSLER 300..
