The days of switching engines without major modifications to the powertrain computer and engine harness are long over.
I don't think there is even an alternative from GM for the 2.2L. The only other engine choice for the s10 was a v6 engine, and that would require major modification for your truck, the computer and harness for one.
Best to replace an engine today with the exact same engine, and from the same year to ensure that all electrical connectors are the same and don't need changing, and that parts will match and bolt up the same. An engine swap is pretty easy, but a different engine may require hours of modifying wiring, connectors, parts, etc. Only a fanatic or die-hard modder would attempt it.
