Ground the motor and the body
Try what danoyachtcap said first. If that does not fix it, you need to replace the entire starter assembly.

Try turning over the engine with a wrench, manually. It might be seizing up.
First try to turn the engine over manually. If that's ok then try this:
While you're trying to start the car, have someone bang on the starter, under the car, not too hard. This will usually un-jam the pinion gear and it will turn over.
I had to do that and it worked great. Then i Just washed the tip of the pinion gear in a cleaner and it's worked now for 15 years.
Hope this is not it.
The motor is not tight or locked up. I just can't get the starter to engage once mounted. Like its not grounded
If the starter spins and the engine is not seized then the pinion gear is stuck.
That the thing the car runs great when it gets started. Ive tried the hammer thing. Nothing. Is there another ground that connects to the starter mount assembly on the transmission side?
No, when you bolt the starter to the engine, that's your good ground connection.. I'm still betting on the pinion gear is stuck, but you'll have to remove the starter and clean out the pinion gear..
The starter solenoid clicks instead of the starter engaging. I can pull the starter out and lean it on the A-arm and the starter will engage and spin. But fails once mounted. I at a wall here
If the starter runs on the bench, then I would say it fails in the car because you don't have a good connection from the battery negative cable and the engine. Check for no voltage existing between battery neg post and engine. Both static and with starter on. There has to be a loss of ground here.

I'm having the same problem. The dealership keeps telling me it's the starter. I've replaced starter and still have the same problem. I have had all the wiring and new key swith put in and still have the same problem. I guess were in the same boat!!!

A solenoid needs so much power to kick in. I think your battery is getting old and not at full capacity. Hove it check and replace if needed.

I don't believe there is a relay. Is the shift lever in park or neutral? Have you tried jiggling the shift lever? Check to see if you are getting power from one of the wires that go to the small terminals on the solenoid when the key is turned to start. If not, I suspect the neutral safety switch or the key switch.

your barking up the wrong gum tree witht the starter motor ,you have an electrical supply problem on the battery terminal area with more than one wire connected or a dodgy earth cable from the engine to the chassis .i would be inclined to check and fit another earth cable from a good connection on the engine -(bell housing) and run it back to battery terminal to eliminate all posibilitys .before anything else ,make you own if you have to but only use copper cable .this is my last question for tonight ,have to go pick er indoors up from work now
