Defective fuel pump. Should I replace it or install an external one?
I do not want to drop the tank or pay the $225.00 for the in-tank pump. Can an external pump pull fuel through the existing pump? The pump works most of the time, so I am pretty sure the rest of the system is OK. I just need to know if the external pump can pull fuel through the in tank pump. Also any advice on how to go about installing the external pump would be great. I have never done one before.
Re: Defective fuel pump. Should I replace it or install...
You should check the fuel pump electrical circuit first off , you may have a relay starting to go bad ! or ground issue or some other electrical problem ! Have you checked a wiring diagram to see what all is involved ? Fuel Pump Electrical Circuits Description and Operation
Re: Defective fuel pump. Should I replace it or install...
Steve, isn't that a better way just to buy a new pump on eBay and replace it DYI? It'll not be $225 - that's the price mechanic told you (included his work of 2 hours = $170)
The main issue is not wanting to drop the tank due to the time involved. The price is for JUST the pump no labor not even the whole assembly. Just the pump. The main issue is not wanting to drop the tank due to the time involved. The price is for JUST the pump no labor not even the whole assembly. Just the pump.

It sounds like you have a defective fuel pump. The pump is locate inside the fuel tank, the fuel tank must be removed to replace the pump. Please follow this procedure to remove the fuel tank. Disconnect neg battery cable, safely raise vehicle, place floor jack under tank, loosen gas tank straps and allow tank to slowly drop halfway, disconnect( this is the hard part) fuel lines, and power connections at tank. Drop tank. With a brass hammer/punch carefully remove retaining ring/seal.Reverse to install.A new pump module will cost you $300-$400 at the dealer. Don't use a cheap pump replace the entire assembly because this is a float/sender/pump/ in one. Replace your fuel filter too or the fuel pump warranty is voided..
Yes ,,instructions are below, Use eye protection for this procedure Remove or Disconnect:
Relieve Fuel Pressure
Disconnect negative battery cable
Raise vehicle on hoist
Remove Fuel Tank
Remove Fuel Gage sending and pump assembly by turning cam lock ring counterclockwise.
Lift assembly from fuel tank and remove fuel pump from fuel gage sender unit.
Disconnect pump wires, hose clamps, and clamp around pump body
Pull pump assembly out of rubber connectors
Inspect fuel pump attaching hose for any signs of deterioration. Replace as
necessary.
Install or Connect:
Push fuel pump assembly into attaching hose
Connect pump wires, hose clamps at attaching hose and around pump body
Place Fuel tank sending unit and pump assembly into tank using new O-ring
Place cam lock over assembly and lock by turning clockwise
Install Fuel Tank
Start engine and check fuel pipe connector for visual leaks
Empty fuel tank, support fuel tank, remove straps from tank (you'll probably have to replace those). Remove fuel filler neck from inside fuel door or at tank, drop tank, remove wire clips and fuel lines as necessary, remove fuel pump, put new pump in. Installation is reverse.

Removal & Installation
CAUTION
The fuel injection system remains under pressure, even after the engine has been turned OFF.
The fuel system pressure must be relieved before disconnecting any fuel
lines. Failure to do so may result in fire and/or personal injury.
Relieve the fuel system pressure using the recommended procedure.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain the fuel tank, then remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
While holding the modular fuel sender assembly down, remove the snap-ring from the designated slots located on the retainer.
WARNING
The
modular fuel sender assembly may spring up from its position. When
removing the modular fuel sender from the tank, be aware that the
reservoir bucket is full of fuel. It must be tipped slightly during
removal to avoid damage to the float.
Remove the external fuel strainer.
Detach the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) piece from the electrical connector and detach the fuel pump electrical connector.
Gently
release the tabs on the sides of the fuel sender at the cover assembly.
Begin by squeezing the sides of the reservoir and releasing the tab
opposite the fuel level sensor. Move clockwise to release the second
and third tabs in the same manner.
Lift the cover assembly out far enough to detach the fuel pump electrical connection.
Rotate the fuel pump baffle counterclockwise and remove the baffle and pump assembly from the retainer.
Slide the fuel pump outlet out of slot, then remove the fuel pump outlet seal.
To install:
Install the fuel pump outlet seal, then slide the fuel pump outlet in the slots of reservoir cover.
Install the fuel pump and baffle assembly onto the reservoir retainer and rotate clockwise until seated.
Install
the lower retainer assembly partially into the reservoir. Line up all 3
sleeve tabs. Press the retainer onto the reservoir making sure all 3
tabs are firmly seated.
Gently pull on the fuel pump reservoir from
retainer to assure a secure fastening. If not secure, replace the
entire fuel sender.
Attach the fuel pump connector.
Fasten the CPA connector to the fuel sender cover.
Sorry. Got to drop the tank. Just break the gas tank bolts and replace them with new ones. If the straps are badly rusted, replace them, too. Look for tank leaks on the top of the tank. Replace the sock on the fuel pump.
In order to get to the fuel pump connector to check the wiring for proper function you must drop the gas tank, but based on what U say the pump is defective, a few tips, 2 people are really needed to do this job on the ground, use a brass drift punch to release the retainer for the fuel pump module inside the tank, and last support the truck with jack stands, get it as high off the ground as possible, at least 3 feet. Use the factory fuel pump if money permits and always replace the fuel filter and pump as a unit repair.
