The shifting linkage is worn. The linkage from the column to the transmission is loose and will need replaced to get the indicator to read the proper gear that you are in. Is the shifting loose? Or does it still seem like it is tight? It could be also be the gear positioning sensor has been moved out of position. If the shifter seems loose then it would be the linkage. If it still seems tight then it should be the sensor.
