Remove the belt, undo the pulley nut, use a special puller to pull the pulley from the shaft, ( available from good tool shops or auto spares shops)undo the retaining bolts for the clutch and replace
mostly it can be done in car without the need to break the gas side of the system

i dont know of any domestic cars that dont have rebuildable/replaceable clutches on the compressor. best way to find out is to call a parts store and see if you can get the part.

How to remove the a/c clutch from a 1998 gmc sierra 1500 5.7 l

I believe this AC compressor is the same as my '95 Astro. The clutch is pressed on to the compressor shaft. You should see a threaded hole in the center of the clutch and a threaded screw in the center of that hole. To get this off you have to have the proper puller. It threads into the clutch and has a screw that you tighten against the end of the screw in the clutch. This pulls the clutch off the compressor (maybe, if it isn't frozen to the shaft). FYI, I just replaced my AC compressor and found that a new compressor with a new clutch was only about $40 more than the clutch alone. The puller cost $30.) Of course, if you replace the compressor you have the work of some parts in the AC system and recharging it. There are some good web sites with good pictures and instructions you may want to look into before you decide. I found that when I replaced the compressor, I had to replace the accumulator and compressor oil and there is some question about flushing the AC system when you install a new compressor. Hope all this helpful. Good luck.

A/c clutch not working. Is the clutch replaceable

Your clutch will not work if the 'fluid' level is low. This is designed to protect the compressor.
Was your air cold before it stopped?
You can buy a pressure gauge and new coolant at most stores for around $20. Make sure it's the right coolant.
The clutch CAN be changed without replacing the compressor.

A/C compressor clutch on my 1994 3.1 L Grand AM

You could just do the clutch ,but it could be something else and not the compressor making noise.

A/C compressor clutch stays ingugae when switch is off

check the compressor clutch relay. The contacts may have fused together. If there is something constantly enegizing the coils then it is either a bad switch or a shorted lectronic component, usually a single transistor inside an electronic control box.

2000 ford taurus ac question: air conditoner works for a short time and starts to blow warm air. This is when the temperature reads hot on the temperature gauge. This occurred on a freeway with the outside...

your electric a/c clutch is wearing out. You have to remove compressor to replace the a/c clutch mounted on the compressor.

If you can get someone to shim it out a little bit, it would work ok. Call a few indpenedent shops and ask if they can shim it and how much it would cost.

Just say, I need to have the clutch on my a/c compressor shimmed so my a/c clutch clamps tighter. 2000 Taurus. How much to do that?

I would guess $100 max.

Otherwise, you need to have clutch & field coil assembly replaced. Around $300 - $350.

Here is a picture of the compressor with clutch mounted on front.

Noise from A/C Compressor

Yes, look for an aircon technician that can swap a/c compressor clutch without removing the compressor from the bracket. if your lucky enough there are technicians who can do it without even leaking or discharging the gas from your aircon system
