Four. There are two located before the catalytic converters and two after the catalytic converters.
The are referred to as bank 1 and bank 2 and sensor 1 or sensor two. Bank 1 is always the same side of the engine as the number one cylinder. Bank 2 is the other side. Sensor 1 is always before the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 is after the catalytic converter.
Bank 1 sensor 1 - same side of the engine as the number one cylinder and before the cat.
Bank 1 sensor 2 - same side of the engine as number 1 cylinder, after the cat.
Bank 2 sensor 1 - Opposite side of the engine as the number one cylinder and before the cat.
Bank 2 sensor 2 - Opposite side of the engine from number 1 cylinder and after the cat.
bank one upstream oxygen sensor on exhaust manifold bank two oxygen sensor after catalytic converter.tell me what code you are getting.bank 1 sensor 1 fuel system is too rich fuel pressure too high fuel pressure regulator leaking or more than 1 fuel injector leaking. fuel contaminated.check spark plugs if black carbon color fuel system too rich. if you getting code bank 1 sensor 2 check for air leaks in the exhaust system, air leaks intake manifold.look for vacuum lines leaks, look for vacuum leaks pcv valve and hose and make egr valve not stuck open or gasket leak.
Yes there are 4 sensors, one on each bank of your V6 above the catalytic converter and also a pair below the cats, maybe you should find an independent garage to put the Mazda on their code reader and find out the whole picture, my reader cost $300 and is low end but gives all the info on each O2 sensor (and all other sensors) in real time so I can see how many are going off spec and need changing. Dealerships work to manufacturers reccomendations and guidelines so probably have to change the pair.
bank 2 is the cylinder in the front of the engine compartment near the radiator, the O2 is either in the exhaust manifold of the bank or in the exhaust pipe off the manifold, round about the size of a jumbo magic marker, you need a special O2 sensor socket to remove it in some cases, if it is in the open then a 7/8 open end wrench will work.
