I've been quoted control arms, ball joints, brakes, rotors. What else is this vehicle known for as far as parts on the front end that need replaced? I don't want to perform an extensive repair only to find that I should have replaced a couple other parts?
I agree the lower control arm bushings are common and so are upper strut bushings.if it was my car and planned on keeping it for awhile i would do the complete struts with new upper plates and all the bushings including the sway bar bushings as far as brakes if the are on sensors the will need to be replaced, you can turn rotors, but any more not to expensive to just replace rotors if you can do it all yourself.have great day
Two things that caused the noise you describe was upper mounting on the struts and the suspension bushings.
The first repair was the struts and have over 50,000 miles since the repair and no problems.
The same sound started to return and I thought it was the same issue with the struts but found it was the left side bushing gone bad. I chose to replace both sides because if one side went bad it wouldn't be long before the other side went. Plus when you replace the bushings a front end alignment must be done and I couldn't see paying for an alignment twice.
This is the only front end repairs or parts needing replaced. The only other repairs made to my 2006 Cobalt LT Sedan was heater core, ignition control device, and replaced heater control unit in the dash. Those are the only major repairs done to the car and it has over 170,000 miles.
I do regular maint. such as oil changes every 3000-4000 miles, changed plugs as needed (always use factory plugs others have a tendency to cause check engine light to come on), flushed antifreeze, and had fuel system cleaned.
That is about all I have done and I drive it hard and fast all the time.
Brakes and rotors will not cause noise unless they are badly worn and this will be evident on inspection
most noise will be from rubber suspension bushes and sway bar and shocky rubbers
I would suggest that you get quotes from suspension accredited shops and have each shop show you what is worn and what is ok
ON good roads ( hard surface) suspension units should last 60.000 miles before requiring repairs ( barring road damage)
