Perhaps it is time to see if the engine will turn over at all. One way is to try to turn the crank pulley on the front of the engine by hand. Most have a large bolt that would take a socket to turn. Another way is to take a large screwdriver and try to turn the flywheel back by the starter. Did you bench test the new starter before installation? Is it time to do that now? Did you match it to the old one?
God bless your efforts.

My old starter on a 1999 ford ranger would spin but not engage the engine to start it. Bought a new starter an it does the same thing. What should i check next?

Starter soups but doesn't engage. Clicking sound: you hear it spinning with a click sound before it starts spinning. No grinding sound. The mechanism to engage the fly wheel could be faulty, probably it is seized, or battery doesn't have enough power to make the solenoid fully pull mechanism (check battery amps charge if low. You may need to look at the starter as someone turns the motor over and make sure it's engaging all the way to fly wheel.
Sometimes you may need to Shem or file down where the two bolts go into the starter too get it far enough into the starter casing to get it to engage.

2002 mazda 626 new starter wont engage flywheel. it sounds like starter is spining wont engage flywheel

Couple possibilities. Was the starter just replaced? If so. Were their any shims (small metal pieces) that were not put back? They space the starter so the bendix and gear can align with fly wheel.. secondly could be a bad starter, broke bendix. Bad gear..or third missing teeth on either fly wheel or starter..

I have a 2003 150 Yamaha four stroke. Starter engages but will not turn fly wheel. Can turn fly wheel by hand and have new battery

Either the starter isn't engaging the flywheel or the flywheel is chewed up/missing part or all the teeth/gears.

1992 subaru legacy starter wont engage fully and makes a loud grinding noise

Sounds like it is not toughing 100% and making full gear contact with the fly-wheel. Replace starter or the misalignment can burr the flywheel causing rounding and subsequent damage to the device.

Car starts but sometimes makes a whirling noise. I was told it was the starter

sounds like the starter is not disengaging the fly wheel quickly like it should when you turn the key the starter cog connects upto a fly wheel that has teeth all around it when the teeth of starter cog connect between teen on wheel it spins it to crank your car then goes back to starter if you hold your key on after starting the noise you hear is the starter cog(teeth ) still engaged in wheel if this is the sound it needs to be serviced not neccassarily replaced
