  • Determine which fuel pump your Saturn Ion will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size and type. This model is available with a 2.0 L LSJ supercharged, 2.2 L l61 and 2.4 L LE514 engine.
  • Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Disconnect the fuel tank by removing the fuel tank strap bolts with a socket wrench.
  • Disconnect the fuel lines and hoses from the fuel pump. Remove the retaining ring for the fuel pump with sending unit wrench J43827 and disconnect the retaining clip by pulling it toward the float arm and lifting up.
  • Pull the fuel pump out of the fuel tank and discard the old fuel tank seal. Remove the feed line from the fuel pump with clamp pliers J43914 and unplug the fuel pump's electrical connector.
  • Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit and be sure to replace the fuel tank seal.
  • Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure and tighten the bolts on the fuel tank strap to 18 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench. Start your vehicle to check for leak

My fuel guage suddenly does not work---the needle stays on "0"---

it sounds like your fuel level sending unit has gone bad. these are usually built into the fuel pump which will require removing the fuel pump to replace.

Had to replace fuel pump in 2006 Saturn Ion... it's only THREE!

i just had the same issue . . .I have been having starting problems with my car (2006 Saturn Ion) and smelling gasoline. It turns out the hose connected to the fuel pump was cracked and leaking gas. The mechanic said that this is a safety issue and should be recalled. He feels that the one hose is not connected and harnessed properly and the vibration to the hose eventually caused the crack. I googled "Saturn 2006 Ion fuel leak" and several other people have had the same issue. What is also the major problem here is that the hose is configured with the fuel pump itself. So, the entire mechanism had to be replaced. It cost me 700.00 for a cracked hose because the fuel pump had to be replaced and my car only is 46,000 miles. This is a major safety issue. I drove for 2 weeks with a car that was leaking fuel. Saturn must know about this and is waiting for the same situtation to happen, but for the car to blow up instead. PLEASE IF YOU ARE READING THIS CAUSE YOU HAVE THE SAME ISSUE . . . . contact the office of defects and the NHTSA . . .This is a saftey issue and a recall needs to be in affect . . .

    Saturn ion fuel pump

Misnikie32 . .. I just had the same problem around the time you figured out your problem and I just got it fixed yesterday. For almost 3 weeks I had starting problems and I constantly smelled gas. The problem is a safety issue and the car needs to be recalled. The hose that is connected to the fuel pump is cracked. Since the hose is incorporated with the fuel pump, the entire mechanism needs to be changed. Look at spending about 700.00 . I informed saturn and told them my life was at danger. Please contact them on their website and goto your state's attorney general and launch a complaint, as well as the office of defective investigations and the NTSAB (google them). This needs to be brought to their attention and all owners of this car. I googled this and many other people are having this problem. Some are even on this forum. PLEASE DO THIS ! ! ! !
