You don't want to rebuild the pump. Get one for around $45. Yeah you may have saved $20 by getting the seal kit. But if the fiberglass vanes inside are worn, you just wasted your money. It will do the same thing, whine or hard steering.

Thats going to be the rack & pinion steering gear or the power steering pump. Have them checked soon! It can jam while driving and can ruin your day!

My 2003 ford focus lost it's power steering, mechanic replaced the rack and pinion thing - lost steering again and now the mechanic says it is the power steering pump. The rack and pinion was replaced...

if the rack and pinion was not leaking or causing problems. then he may of made a wrong move! if the rack was fine before, and you just lost power steering. then it is most likely the power steering pump or the lines that go from rack to the pump. good-day ! if a rack goes bad, you will get a bad steering problem or just bad steering.

Heavy as in ,stiff steering?
Not usually the pump. It's only money.
Lets go with a worn steering rack, after you check out the strut bearings, being worn/stiff etc.

Power steering keeps going stiff all the time

There are 2 things that cause power steering to go stiff. The power steering pump itself either from failure or "lack of fluid" and the rack and pinion assy under the car.
Most of the time the failure is the power steering pump itself. The teflon rollers fail inside the pump and it either stops providing an output pressure or it seizes up. You can loosen the power steering pump belt then try to rotate the pump by hand. It should move by hand. If it feels like it is intermittently locking up as you rotate, it the teflon rollers have failed and the pump will need to be replaced.

Leaking power steering fluid

Dear Nina; Your best bet is to keep a few bottles of fluid with you for the trip. The reason being, is that the steering system will become very difficult to operate and there is a danger of burning out the power steering pump if it was to run dry for any lenth of time. Thank you, Dana

Power steering no power ?

Three possible causes that I can think of:
1. The belt for the power steering pump broke.
2. The power steering pump itself failed.
3. Loss of power steering fluid.
Best to find a local shop to deal with this. The power steering system may need servicing if adding power steering fluid doesn't work.
