Jun 28, 2010 - Car starts and after warmed up.. it dies! ... but if i let it sits for awhile till the engine is cool down it starts right up but after its warmed up.. it dies.
I would start with cleaning the throttle bore and plate. Then clean the Idle Air Control valve, IAC, as this is the device that controls idle speed. Use a can of spray carb cleaner and an old toothbrush. Trouble with the IAC would make sense if you can keep the engine going by holding down the gas pedal a bit.
Use the carb cleaner to check for vacuum leaks at hose connections and elbows. run engine and spray short bursts at hoses and listen for idle speed changes.
And lastly if problem is still there check MAP sensor.
Replace the temperature sending unit/sensor. This sensor tells the computer to put the engine into cold start mode and it then sets idle a bit higher and puts a bit more fuel into the engine to keep it running without having to touch the throttle. Once it's warm, sensor tells computer to go to normal run mode and it's done. No problem.
These Engines use a plastic intake manifold with rubber gaskets sealing them to the cylinder heads. The workshop I worked for had this problem & went through heaps of different scenarios to work it out. Turned out the intake manifold gasket had gone hard & was leaking until the heat of the engine had re-created the seal, which was taking anything from 30 seconds to a minute. It took heaps of testing to arrive at this conclusion & once the gasket had been replaced it was as good as new.
sounds real easy either a bad idle air control solenoid or more likley a blown throttle body gasket. to test fro a blown gasket, with engine running and cool spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner around base of tb were it bolts to intake. when it hits the bad area, should idle down and be normal for a second or 2. iac is possible,try this first since its so common and let me know
