Could be no fuel pressure for the injectors
could be no spark and the apparent trying to start is from the compression ignition of the starter fluid
best have the fault codes read first to determine the area of failure

My 2001 ford escape won't start . I checked all

Can\'t really help you with the no start problem without more information, but would advise you to stop using starting fluid right away. Starting fluid is hard on Diesel engines but they are made for much higher compression so will usually survive intermittent use of starting fluid. Gas engines just plain can\'t handle the much higher than normal compression that starting fluid produces which will destroy valves, piston rings, connecting rods, starters, ring gears on the transmission and head gaskets in short order. If you don\'t want to have to completely rebuild your gas engine don\'t use starting fluid on it ever!

My car turns over but won't start, when started

The year make and model would be handy to know.
You would need to check the fuel system and find out why you don't have fuel to the injectors or carb.

87 911 carrera will turn over but wont start.... has no spark from coil, but has 12 volts to coil with key on.

If the car is getting power from the battery(lights turn on; radio turns on) when you turn the key, then it is your starter or gas distributor. To test that, you need to pour a little gas right in the hole where the engine and intake meet. Pour a little gas in that hole. If it starts up, then it is your gas distributor that is the problem not giving gas to the engine. If it doesn't start up with gas in the engine, then it is your starter. Either will be $100-$200 fix at a shop.

My Subaru started, ran for a moment and then quit. Now it 'turns over' but won't start. I tried to start it by towing it, with no luck. Yes, it has gas :) I gave it a shot of starting fluid-it tried to...

Sounds like you might have a fuel delivery problem, being it tried to start up after you gave a shot of starting fluid tells me theres probably a no fuel pressure issue with it, check the fuel pump fuse and relay and make sure they all check out fine, if they all appear to be good theres a good chance that you have a faulty fuel pump and will require the fuel tank be removed to access the fuel pump for further inspection....
