2006 cobalt making a whirring sound like the old speedometer cable but am told vehicle not equipped with cable what else would cause this noise

well , if the head makes noise its sure is not the cable.
99% sure.
use $5 stethoscope to cluster face, some needles scream.
hear that , as is common, its the ***** scream, of IM AT END OF MY LIFE, (needle bushing shot) btw no speedo shops in usa will touch this cluster, not one.

the cable can vibrate, and make a weak sound
but if rusted, inside, rust can cause any sound it wants.
thank about that. but will be in the cable not the head.

do not put grease in the rear of the head, it will migrate in to the head and wreck it.
use a new cable, it has non migratory grease inside.

the last one i did, had to buy 3 used heads to make one good one.
good luck on car this old, finding past that work.
both suzuki and geo no longer sells heads. so.....

YOU NEED A NEW ALTERNATOR..YOU CAN ALSO GET A VOLT METER TO TEST THE CHARGING SYSTEM WHEN CAR IS RUNNING/CONNECT POSITIVE CABLE TO POS ON BATT/CONNECT NEG ALSO TO NEG ON BATT SEE IF ITS READING VOLTAGE!!

This may be caused by a bad wheel bearing, have the wheel bearings checked, this is the most common thing i know of, good luck.

I've had the struts done 2 times all ready in my 2006 cobalt as well as power strering now i've had to have a valve repaced i've had nothing but problmes with this car since I got it

It is most likely the control arm bushings. These are notorious for going out on Cobalts. I have had mine replaced twice.

The control arms on both the driver and passenger side have rubber bushings which probably deteriorated. This is causing metal to hit metal when the car goes over bumps.

The bushings themselves are relatively inexpensive; you can most likely pick them up at a dealership for under $40. The only issue is installing them. You have to use a hydraulic press to press the old bushings out and press the new bushings in. This isn't difficult, but you need the equipment.

The clicking sound comes from the old-fashioned thermal blinker switch. There is an electronic flasher unit whick is a direct replacement (and usually more reliable) which does not make a noise. This is probably what you have. There is no problem.

im not too sure when the crossover is but the newer cobalts are equipped with electric power steering, and to me it sounds like a short between the powersteering circuit and the vehicle speed circuit.

Disconnecting the drive shaft is a bit more of a tricky prospect than you were told. Odds are it won't eliminate the whirring, either. First, just disconnecting it from the system is going to leave a gap in your transmission that allows for all kinds of crud to get in, and may even (in certain transmissions) allow for gears to drop out of place and potentially cause damage. There are kits available that allow you to remove the shaft and place a "dummy end" in the transmission. Another possibility is to leave the end of the shaft that inserts into the transfer case in place, while only disconnecting the U joint in the shaft and removing the remainder. Problem is, either one of those is still going to have a spindle and, if in fact that is the cause of your sound, you'll still get that noise.

You'll be better off either putting up with the noise and leaving things alone or getting a more accurate determination of the exact cause and deciding if it's worth fixing.

vehicles equipped with electric power steering. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which a sudden loss of power steering assist could occur at
any time while driving the vehicle. If the power steering assist is lost, a chime will sound and a "Power Steering" message will be displayed in the
Driver Information Center to inform the driver of the condition. Steering control will be maintained, as the vehicle defaults to a manual steering mode.
If power steering assist is lost, it may require greater driver effort at low vehicle speeds, for example, below 15 mph (25 km/h). Unless a driver
compensates for this additional effort, it may increase the risk of a crash.

It is part of the waste gate just above the gas tank. It periodically checks for leaks and pressurizes and releases. Gives a ticking noise when it does this. Not a problem and GM is aware of this and said its normal on our cars.
