I have worked for a ford dealer for 1yr and a half at one time. about 5 yrs ago. Very small town. I was the only mechanic. I had never worked for a dealer before, so I got to see the corporate side. Armed with a laptop and a VCM, I had noticed allot of reprogramming the ecu. I bought the Malibu 3yrs ago because the shop that was working on it couldn't figure it out. I payed the customer $2000 for it and drove it home. The cat converter was plugged, I mean it was bad. I replaced it with an E-bay special and the car ran great. It had 178,000mi on it or so. I pulled the spark plugs and they were the oem plugs. replaced them, and later had to replace the coil pack.in the summer time when the temp would rise under the hood it would misfire on 1 and 3. fixed that. over the last 3 yrs driving it everyday i get the same mpg as always.20 in town and 30 hwy. Seems ok to me. It does run rich at idle. SO, after all this did gm do an update on the ecm on the cat converter recall? The chevy dealer here won't give me an answer. Now I know the plugs and misfire caused or contributed to the clogged cat, But what was the oe recall for? Do any of you gm guys or girls know why? I also know they had recalls on the trucks as well cat converters they were setting Inefficient codes. I wish I had a vcm for gm to see if I could update my ecm. Maybe that would fix my rich idle problem.

ignition mod. grounds, pcm or timing belt could all be it but, I would have to look at timing first.

Is this a 5.7? They are notorious for intake manifold gasket leaks. When mine did it, the diagnostics blamed it on an ignition misfire also! Replaced the gaskets and it runs smooth!

The injector is a good possibility, although you should check for spark in the wire first, as the electrical is the weakest link in the system. Put a spare plug in the end of the wire with the plug resting on metal, then have someone crank the van to see if you have spark that far, test and replace spark plug, (do not get shocked!) then look into a new injector or a good cleaning.

with all of these replacement parts done, you have one of two things I can think of.
The computer can cause this and not show up on and equipment,I seen it happen,it a chance you would have to decide to take.
the other it would have to be mechanical something with your engine itself that is not showing yet.
