SOURCE: 1996 Nissan Maxima no 2nd gear on auto transmission?

do not flush the trans, that will make it worse.
My friend you have no second gear, you need trans rebuilt.
If you flush it now you can cause more damage.

SOURCE: 1996 dodge intrepid 3.3 transmission wont shiftout of first gear

two issues here. this may be a low fluid issue. i would check the level of the fluid first. the next issue could be a blown shift solenoid. these are located inside of the transmission pan.also, check the filter as well.(transmission filter could be clogged)

SOURCE: Trans Locks In 2nd Gear

Your transmision shift selonoid is bad. Had same problem on a '98, changed the shift selonoid and works good now. It is located on the front of the transmision under the fluid lines. The part is about $150.00.

1996 Plymouth Voyager starts in 2nd gear and never shifts regardless of how much gas I give it. The RPMs race up, but it never shifts. It is an automatic transmission with a 3.3L engine. Mechanic told me...

The valve body is a part roughly the size of a 8 X 11 piece of paper, only about 4 inches thick.
It is made of aluminum, and is really filled with lots of holes and passageways.
It is up inside your transmission oil pan.
As you drive, transmission oil is supposed to circulate inside this, and change your gears as you drive down the road.
These do fail occasionally, and are expensive to replace, often costing 1,000 to 3,000 to change, as most shops will overhaul your whole transmission in the process.
If you will type in " Ebay motors", and then type in "Plymouth valve body", you can see a picture of one.
    Be blessed.

When you stop transmission hangs in 2nd gear. you can put it in park and shut engine off then start engine and transmission will shift.

    transmission going into limp mode,
check speed sensor, and input sensor and output sensors will fix it
