The brake switch at the pedal does have six wires, but none go to the multifunction switch (on the steering column). The white wire with tan tracer goes to the combination flasher to be integrated with the turn signals/hazard lights. The combination flasher is under the dash next to the steering column and has a sixteen pin connector (ten of which have wires).
Is there a problem with horn wiring in the steering column? The safest fix is to fix so the horn button on the steering will work. I'm not sure I understand your problem?
You could mount a separate horn button on the dash, but, that isn't the safest thing to do because your used to the horn button on the steering wheel.
If you mount a separate horn button, all you need is the horn ground that goes up the steering column, it is black. Find the harness under dash that goes into your steering column, black wire, just to test, use jumper wire from that wire to good ground, if the horn starts sounding, that's it. Run that wire to horn button. Also, you may need to run second ground from that horn button, if it doesn't ground through mounting bracket.
The fuses are located on a fuse block, they provide increased circuit
protection and reliability. The fuse block is located under the left
side of the instrument panel and steering column. The fuse block should
be visible from underneath the steering column, near the pedal bracket.
If the block is not visible, check for a removable compartment door or
trim panel which may be used on later models to hide the block. On
1996-97 models, there is also a fuse/relay panel mounted underhood.

no, u shouldn't have to pull the steering wheel. pull the cover off the column, there are 2 or 4 nuts that hold the column up to the dash, remove them and let the column lay on the seat- u should disconnect your battery before doing so. you can get to the shift tube from there- most likely u'll find that the bushings have gone bad and need replacement.
Should just plug in (2 prongs) Not sure if you have Lumina van (on firewall just left of steering column under instrument panel) or sedan/coupe (driver side under dash, on passenger side of steering column)
