Hi Timothy. If the heater won't blow hot air out, then the valve to pass engine coolant into the heat exchanger for cabin air heating is probably damaged/disconnected.
Turning on the cabin heater is usually advised when climbing long grades in the summertime for this reason - it's like a small additional radiator to bleed off heat from the coolant.
If you are also overheating the engine, the most likely problem is a bad thermostat. The thermostat shuts off flow to the radiator, making the coolant in the engine just go straight back into the engine, until it hits a target temperature. Then it'll open up and let coolant go to the radiator. If the thermostat is defunct, it may not ever let coolant to the radiator. You can check this by running the car for a short while, then stopping, opening the hood, and carefully moving a hand close to the radiator to see if it feels hot. Be careful - if the thermostat is stuck, the engine might be close to popping the radiator relief vent, and you don't want to be nearby if that happens - you can get scalded but good (I speak from personal experience on this, after a hose cut loose on a Chevell SS I was working on.
Hoping this helps.
Good Luck!

Check coolant level and color if milk chocolate head gaskets blown.or bad thermostat stuck shut
any white stinky smoke coming from tail pipe?
SOURCE: Heater doesn't blow hot air
First check the coolant level in the radiator. Check your heater core hoses on the firewall underneath the hood. Let the car come up to temp. and feel the two hoses. If only one of them is getting hot you may have bad heater core or a bad heater control valve.

located in thermostat housing or in intake nearby (where top hose connects from radiator to engine)

If the blower is blowing air just fine, but you cannot control the temperature, you need to listen to air coming from the vents while turning the temperature from hot to cold. If you do n ot hear any change in airflow, then you may a temperature door in the dash broken. this is becoming a common problem on the Equinox and Pontiac Torrent,

check the heater temp. control pot under the hood, inline on one of your heater hoses, it may be sticking causing hot water to only get to your heater core when the engine is at high r.p.m.s
