The P0513 is a bad immobilizer code, which is part of the security system. Apparently a bad code can cause the engine to run rough, which could be causing the other code. P0404 is an EGR code.

The dash warning indicators are showing problems picked up by your vehicles on board computers.

The first step to understanding what all these warnings relate to is having a diagnostic reader reveal the codes that have been registered. This reader is called a OBDII code reader.

Some auto parts stores provide a free diagnostic summary. I think Auto Zone is one of these retailers that will provide this free service.

You can go to Advance Auto, Auto Zone, or other auto parts stores and they will hook up their OBD diagnostic tool to your car and it will read the codes that are causing you your problem. Then they can tell you what the code means, or at least a general idea of where the problem is. For instance, I had a check engine light on, I took it to Advance Auto, they identified the code and told me it was related to the ignition or a spark problem. He told me in his experience to check the spark plugs and spark plug wires first. It was a cracked spark plug boot that gave me an ignition problem whenever it rained or was damp/humid out. You can also google the actual code once you know it, the auto parts stores will give you a printout after they run the OBD scan tool on your car.

P0513 stands for invalid SKIM Key. Basically it means that the "computer chip" that is in your ignition key which has a special code is not recognized by your vehcile compter (PCM). In most cases that I have come across is that either your VIN is not entered or is the incorrect VIN programmed into the PCM. Have you recently changed the PCM ? You may try another ignition key but I doubt that would work unless you are using the wrong key for the vehicle. You will need special diagnostic computer programs in order to correct this problem. Most likely your PCM will need to be "Flashed" to the VIN. This really isn't a weekend/backyard/part time mechanic fix. Hope this helps you to understand what the code is and what it means. Guessing the vehicle won't start.....

Is there a way to check a trouble code light manually without diagnostic tools by using key posistions or holding trip and odometer buttons?

No, you will need an OBDII code reader. The good news is that most Auto Zone stores will check your codes and tell the what they are for free. Don't listen to their advice though: their job is to sell you parts - not diagnose what's wrong with your car. Keep that in mind.

2003 beetle a orange symbol came up on the dash and has a lighting bolt going into a shape like an engine,wont go away what dose this mean thanks

That light means that there is a trouble code currently on your cars computer or (OBD) On Board Diagnostic system . If you go to Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts, they will scan it for free, and erase it if its something simple. IF its something important, they should be able to give you SOME insight, but I would post back here with the trouble code number for better assistance. Thanks.

I'd go to an auto parts store that will check for any diagnostic codes free of charge (autozone and advance auto both do) and if you have any codes, list them here and I can tell you their definitions and the most common solutions to fix them in detail if needed

It sounds like you have a failure of the EGR valve.
