What can I check to troubleshoot M S light coming on flashing when reverse is selected? The car does go into 4-wheel drive and all of this only clears when the car is turned off and sits for a while.

Try selecting 2 wheel drive and reverse truck a couple of yards see does it come out

have the actuator (mounted on the drivers side transfer case) checked. that is what makes the selection from 2-4 hi-4 low. it takes the place of a gear shift. they are a fairly inexpensive and easy repair (if thats the problem). i would start there providing you have checked the fuses and relays. i hope this helps.

Have you checked or scanned for a Wheel Speed Sensor issue? (WSS)

Sounds like a "WSS" (wheel speed sensor) problem. Each wheel has one. Located on the backside of each hub, between the brake disc and hub bearing. Check for loose connector first. Wire damage? Wiring touching exhaust pipes or rubbing wheel or tire? Look for mud or debris or damage to the sensor's or the rotating sensor ring. ( has a lot of "teeth") Try driving in reverse, in a straight line 25 to 30 feet, then drive forward twice that distance. If that does not clear the warning lamps most auto parts stores can hook into your computer (usually for free) and determine which sensor(s) have an issue. Replacing these sensors is common and simple. You may still need to get the code cleared to turn light off.

I was researching the recalls for the 2002 tundra and havent found any recall pertaining to the 4whl drive. Sometimes when people have their 4wheel drive locked in and drive on pavement for any length of time, whether it be just a couple of feet or a couple of miles, over time it creates a binding of the gears in your transfer case. Once the bind is so great, the engaging and disengaging starts malfunctioning and leads to bigger problems overall. I could be wrong about this being the problem that you have but I think its something to look into. It wouldnt hurt to put your vehicle up off all fours and release the bind if any by running through the gears while in 2 and rour wheel drive while all four tires can move freely and release. See if that works for you. Check your gear oil front , center and rear and use much caution when attempting this suggestion. Sounds like your 4x4 is engaged in 4 low. If your Tach shows High RPM then your still in 4 wheel drive

Start the truck, place in Neutral and try shifting Out of 4 Low,into 2 wheel drive then reverse for about 10-20 feet to try and help it disengage from 4 Low.

most vehicles do have a yellow light that comes on and usually after engaging 4 wheel drive you have to reverse for 2 to 4 feet, after that your 4 wheel drive should be working fine

i had a ford explorer that did the same thing and after asking around about it they told me some of the newer cars you have to reverse an inch or two and it will kick in to 4 wheel drive. that might work

Try selecting 2 wheel drive and reverse for 20meter .
