Check Linkage for the 4WD transfer case, between the shifter and the case. if it is a direct case mounted shifter, you may need to remove it and check for obstruction.

Have you tried to shift it to 4H while at a slow roll in N? Sometimes that used to work for me in my older floor mount 4WD truck. Give it try!

SOURCE: NO 5TH GEAR IN MY 1995 MITS 3000,NO NOISE,NO PROBLEMS SHIFTING

I have the same problem. on the passenger side under the fender you will have access to the transmission. Remove the cap on the end. You will need to drain the transmission fluid and replace all the gears in the end cap if damaged hopefully they are not and you can just tighten up the nut. What happens is a nut comes loose and backs off the pressure on the bearings and you loose 5th. I removed the entire transmission and opened it up. There is nothing wrong with the other gears, because your problem is with the 5th gear synchronizer assembly. I let mine go too long and I'm having to replace everything. Make sure you put the appropriate torque on the nut and hit it with a hammer to lock it down. This should really be designed with a different method of keeping that nut in place. It's costing me lots of time and now money at the stealership. Good LUCK.

SOURCE: transmission problem stuck in sport shift mode

I also have a 2009 Outlander Sportronic transmission with a V6 engine.
Bought it this summer ... transmission appeared fine but seemed to automatically slow down the vehicle using the engines compression whenever I let go of the gas pedal.
Now that the cold weather is upon us here in Canada, whenever I accelarate normally (not like a teenager) the transmission takes quite a bit of time to shift into second... If I rev up the engine (quick take off) it seems to help but the shifting of gears is not as smooth as I would expect it (mildly slips and kicks into second)...

The worst is when come to a complete stop ... then the transmission kicks coming down from the higher gears???

I read somewhere that this is because this transmission is a CVT type and is learning my driving habits in order to adjust itself so the vehicle becomes more fuel efficient... Not sure but if the trany is computer controlled then it must be poorly writen program...
I'm taking the car in to the dealer and will write back on the diagnostic they give me ...

Brakes with depress so gear shift can release

Your question is too vague. Brakes don't "lock".
Turn ignition on, but do NOT start engine. Step on brake pedal and you should hear a Click near the gear shift lever. This is the relay that unlocks the gear shift. If you don't hear a click each time you tap the brake pedal, you have an electrical problem - bad relay, break in wiring etc. You will likely need to have it towed to dealer for diagnosis/repair.

When I turn the ignition switch to start the vehicle I often cannot shift the stick shift out of Park. If I immediately try to switch gears after starting the engine it usually works but if I leave it more...

.
Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system prevents a shift out of PARK unless the brake pedal is depressed. The shift interlock system has a shift lock actuator mounted on the floor shifter assembly. If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the shift actuator will allow the shifter to be moved out of PARK only when the brake pedal is pressed.
Electroniclly controlled !

Condition Possible Sources Action
  • The shift interlock system does not release or lock correctly
  • Fuse in battery junction box (BJB)
  • Check fuses.
  • Brake pedal position (BPP) switch
  • CHECK the BPP switch. REFER to Section 206-09 .
  • Floor shifter wiring and/or connectors
  • Transmission selector lever
  • Ignition system
  • Go To Pinpoint Test A .

I have a Lexus RX300 1999 model and have this recent problem. engine running normally but gear gets stuck in Parking mode and won't shift. had to depress the emergency button on the gear shift and

Hi there,

Some automatic vehicles rely on the brake switch (mounted on brake pedal) to be activated by depressing brake pedal. This signal then operates a relay and switch, to release the gear lever.

Firstly, I would check the brake pedal switch (are your brake lights working?).

If brake switch is confirmed OK, then inspect the relay (and related circuit components) of the gear release switch.

Adust clutch cable.Test...start the car in first gear with clutch fully depressed, parking break off. Slowly release the clutch. determine when the vehicle starts to move. If clutch is fully depressed call that 100%, fully released is 0%. The vehicle should be moving at around the 55-45% range.

2nd gear clutching

STOP Downshifting!
STOP Forcing gear change, watch the Engine RPMs and shift accordingly, HOMBRE's are as good as the operator's. Hombre's have dash shift indicators which illuminate when it's time to 'shift' and not before, This has nothing to do with gear oil either. If you've drained it, you best fill it immediately and make sure it's ample level. The heat these gears sustain in is inceredible, cooling lubricant is essential. Here's a tip, while engine is OFF, ignition key is engaged, dash is illuminated, depress clutch peddle, keep it depressed and walk through all gears with gear shift, shifting should be smooth and unpeded, including reverse. If resistance is experienced at one or more gears, gear alignment is off as a result of inproper gear shifting while driving. Continue to drive vehicle just shift slower until clutch needs replacement then do an entire drive shaft upgrade. It worth it, it's great truck.
