You can't disconnect a factory alarm as it has an immobiliser. you need to reset it. Disconnect the battery, go an enjoy a coffee, come back and reconnect it.

No remote? How do you get into the car and start it without a keyfob and key?

Ah, OK, you can remove those, but I would suggest using and alarm installer to remove it properly. Short job.

Patently impossible to do. The remote is the key to operating everything. The car thinks you are stealing it.

Hi
I would find the alarm unit and either dissconnect it or replace the ni-cads.
At this age the rechargeable batteries will have failed so as it gets cold at night, the alarm thinks the voltage drop is a burglar!
So set off the alarm :

1998 toyota Avalon, the car alarm is going off when opening the drivers door manually with the key (remote is broke) and then the car will not start.

Same here... I have a 1998 Toyota Avalon XL. My car battery died. Replaced my car battery, but found out that when you unplug and plug the car battery with this car it engages in security mode (I have factory car alarm). This disables the engine and wont let you turn the ignition aka start the car engine until the remote (keyless entry) "UNLOCK" is applied. My remote is also lost so I cannot disable the alarm.
The only thing I can think of to do is unplug the battery again to disable everything (car alarms are annoying...) and call the dealer to pick the car up and perform the diagnosis. Most likely they will offer you another keyless (ugh... expensive) and/or you could ask to disable the factory car alarm.
I know thats not much help but it seems to be the only option from what I researched currently....
