How do you remove rack and pinion from 1989 Accord LXI? I cannot pull it completely down to remove it from vehicle!

Removed all necessary parts but cannot get the rack down to be able to slide it to the right and remove it. Near gear box where bushing is I cannot slide the rack left or right due to indentation where bushing goes.

How can I replace rack and pinion?

The part your referring to is more commonly purchased as a steering gear assembly. Raise the front end of the vehicle. Disconnect the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles, be sure to loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod first as it will be more difficult once removed. disconnect the high and low pressure lines from the steering gear. if necessary lower the vehicles sub-frame. disconnect the steering intermediate shaft from where it couples with the input shaft on the steering gear. Unbolt and remove the steering rack. Installation is the reverse of removal. Steering wheel turn all the way around no control

If your steering wheels turns all the way but your wheels don't:
This would have to be either a broken rack and pinion(steering gear) or the shaft between the rack and pinion and the steering wheel would have to be broken. This would need to be visually inspected to be sure which is the problem.

I would have to guess that your steering wheel is no longer connected to the rack (as opposed to something in the rack breaking). My best guess is that your steering column shaft snapped.

They can be replaced, and the necessary parts are sold, but it's not the easiest thing in the world to replace.

stick your head down under the dash on the driver's side where the brake and gas pedals are, and look up at the steering shaft (can't miss it). Now turn the steering wheel. Does that shaft turn?

Rack and pinion 2006 lancer

1. Jack the car onto stands and remove the front wheels.
2. Remove the drivers seat and the lower dash covers over the pedals.
3. THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT. Place the steering wheel at center, and remove the key, to lock the steering column for the rest of the job. If you don't do this you WILL destroy the air bag clock spring under the steering wheel, and they are VERY expensive and fiddly to install.
4. Move the carpet / mats as necessary and undo the splined connection on the pinion shaft.
5. Drain the power steering fluid and disconnect the hoses from the rack. The hose connections will be very tight.
6. Undo the tie rod ends, and the two clamps that secure the rack to the frame. With some wiggling the rack can be removed.

Can not separate the intermediate shaft assembly from rack and pinion

After removing the pinch bolt and nut it is usually necessary to tap in a small chisel or large screwdriver to open up the slot sufficient for removal. Sometimes burrs hold components together and sometimes there is a corrosion bond so a squirt of penetrating oil is a good idea too.

Power steering fluid is leaking - on which side of the car is the rack and pinion when sitting in the drivers seat.

Hi, Aillathu,
The rack and pinion unit fits across from left to right....It is fitted onto the cross member....The pinion is fitted into the housing at almost right angles to the rack....The rack and pinion is a very positive steeling method, giving excellent response and usually good road feel....The unit consists of the rack which is fitted into the housing and joins the left and right wheels....and the pinion at more or less right angles to the rack...A leakage usually indicates worn oil seals which become damaged when a protective boots is broken....(The protective covers fitting onto the end of the rack housing)....The pinion is the part which attaches to the Steering column and the steering wheel....
If you're intending to do this job yourself, remember to pin punch 'match marks' onto the steering wheel and the top of the column before removing the nut. Next disconnect the steering fluid lines and drain the fluid into a container....(Don't forget to use goggles)
Jack the vehicle up and remove the front wheels....Turn the steering so that the tie rod ends can be loosened and removed from the housings (this will require a taper loosening tool)....removing them can also be achieved with a large hammer, but this method is not recommended!....Set the steering at straight ahead....Remove the joint attaching the pinion to the steering column....Once removed loosen the saddles holding the assembly onto the cross member and remove from the vehicle. Replacement of the seals is not as easy as removing the unit from the car, as the job requires special adjustments made to the unit and a very clean working area. Before you do this job please make sure that the leakage is from the rack and pinion and not on one of the hoses....

Our 2002 Cadillac Escalade has a problem when pulling into parking places or making tight turns. The whole vehicle shakes and bumps and it feels like there is no power steering.

There could be a problem with the rack and pinion mechanism.

First, check the fluid level in the power steering pump.

If the level is ok, service to the rack and pinion will be necessary.

I just bought a 93 honda civic and I took it to goodyear and they said I needed my tie rods tightend is there a way I can do it myself?

Yes. If it's to correct alignment, the inner tie rod shaft has to be moved into your outer tie rod and then tightened. this is all done from the wheel area.

If it is to correct play in the steering, then this should apply.

The inner tie rod connection to the Rack unit is hidden by the rack boot which will need to be removed from the Rack unit but not completely removed from the shaft, just pushed over out of the way while working on the inner tie rod adjustment. The large nut on the end of the inner tie rod will have to be loosened & checked, for any damage, then reinstalled & tightened to the correct amount necessary to cause sufficient drag on the inner tie rod but not too much to restrict it during normal use.

You may even want to consider a remanufactured Rack unit if you have too much slack in the steering. Tightening the Inner Tie Rods doesn't replace the seals & rebuild the remainder of the Rack & Pinion, yet these parts all have the same amount of wear on them that the Inner Tie Rod does.

Manuals available w/step by step instructions for your vehicle at parts stores. good luck

How to install rack and pinion bellow boots on 1991 honda accord

Inside the boot toward to rack (inner tie rod) there is a washer that has to be removed. Then you'll be able to see the wrench contact area that has to be removed to release the inner tie rod from the rack. Then just put it all back together, don't forget the washer lock. Turn the steering wheel as far as it will go according to which sides you're working on at the time to get the most comfortable access.
