I can here the tranfercase locking in but its not turning front tires at all ?

Your vehicle had option of two different 4x4 systems ,
New Venture Gear 263 Selectable Two Speed Transfer Case
The NVG 263 transfer case features a three button shift control switch located on the instrument panel. When the vehicle has the ignition key in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module starts monitoring the transfer case shift control switch to determine if the driver desires a new mode/gear position. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position will begin flashing to inform the driver that the transfer case shift control module has received the request for a new mode/gear position. The lamp will continue to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been reached (or has been engaged). Once the new mode/gear position is fully active, the switch indicator lamp for the new position will remain ON constantly.
The NVG 263 transfer case provides the driver with 3 manual mode/gear positions:
• 2HI - 2 Wheel Drive high range
• 4HI - 4 Wheel Drive high range
• 4LO - 4 Wheel Drive low range

The NVG 236/246 transfer case features a 4 button shift control switch located on the instrument panel. When the vehicle has the ignition key in the RUN position, the transfer case shift control module starts monitoring the transfer case shift control switch to determine if the driver desires a new mode/gear position. At a single press of the transfer case shift control switch, the lamp of the new desired position will begin flashing to inform the driver that the transfer case shift control module has received the request for a new mode/gear position. The lamp will continue to flash until all shifting criteria has been met and the new mode/gear position has been reached, or has been engaged. Once the new mode/gear position is fully active, the switch indicator lamp for the new position will remain ON constantly.
If there are problems with electronic part of the systems the shift control switch light will flash warning of a problem , If no lights you have a mechanical problem in the transfer case itself .
The front axle control circuit consists of an electric motor actuator which engages and disengages the front axle. The front axle actuator motor consists of a Permanent Magnetic (PM) motor, a worm gear controlled plunger, a front axle switch and an electronic control circuit all within the actuator assembly.
The front axle actuator has four circuits connected to it, a front axle feed circuit, front axle ground circuit, front axle control circuit and a front axle switch circuit.
Whenever a shift to AUTO 4WD, 4HI, or 4LO is requested, the transfer case shift control module engages the front axle by grounding the front axle control circuit through a current limiting driver. Test Description
The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.
Tests the electrical function of the front axle actuator. Helps determine between mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
Tests for proper power and ground at the front axle actuator.
Tests the operation of the front axle control circuit.
Helps determine if the transfer case shift control module is able to monitor the front axle switch.
Tests the front axle switch circuit for an open or high resistance.
Measures the voltage between the front axle feed circuit and ground.
Tests the front axle control circuit for an open or high resistance.
Inspects the front axle for a mechanical malfunction.
Tests for open in the front axle feed circuit.

How do I know whether 4x4 is working?

that is part time 4wd
and i bet has manual locks on both front axle ends.
how'd i know that.???? grin
first off PT 4wd is for ICE or offroad
SO if NO ICE roads handly (i cant see you drive)
then go off road, or gravel road, or not pavement.
then shift to 4wd.
the rear will have power, for sure.
so that means how to test the front end
i do so on jack stands
put the car up on left side
engine off.
lock the front left lock and right.
now turn the left tire by hand,, bingo you cant.

if you can and the axle behind it does not spin that means the left lock is bad.
if the left axle does turns and so does the right axle , that means th right lock is bad.
3 tire on ground rules. part time.
the front drive shaft will not turn, if it does the transfer case is not in 4H or 4L. if the transfer case is working the rear drive shaft can not turn, in this test. (cuz both tires are on the ground)

Can i manualy take it out of 4x4

Those older fords you have to put the 4x4 selector into 2H or 2 High on the floor shifter. Then go to the front tires and in the very center of the tire there will be a knob that say Locked and Unlocked. Turn the knob to unlocked on both sides. Then you will not have front wheel dragging on the drive train and only the rear wheels will be the drive tire. TO put it back in 4x4. Turn the knob back to locked on each front tire and put the truck in 4H or 4 High to get 4x4. Only use 4L or 4Low when your stuck to prevent spinning your tires with full power.


Now if your has the automatic locking hubs I would switch them out with manual ones because the automatic ones were problematic where they get stuck or not work at all. It requires replacing the locking hub assembly which isn't that hard to do.

When my car is stuck in the snow and doesnt seem to get traction only one wheel spins and not the other and its front wheel drive wouldnt both spin?

No, even a 4x4 will have only 1 wheel that will spin on each axle in this instance. It's called a floating differential. For stock vehicles with non locking differentials like you have, both cannot spin or have full power at the same time. Hard to explain on this, but picture your car making a hard right turn. Both front wheels would be spinning at different speeds because of the turn. The passenger side tire is spinning much slower than the drivers side tire, therefore if both were spinning at the same time, your tires would chirp and skip on the pavement which would eventually ruin your differential. In offroad applications, we WANT the differentials locked and turning at the same time with true 4x4. But in normal everyday vehicles, even standard stock 4x4's, only 1 tire will do the spinning per axle unless it has possitraction or full locked axle. Clear as snow?

Unfortunately, It sounds to be an internal planetary gear problem, which will probably require rebuilding or outright replacing

When i lock the hubs in and put it in 4wd the rear tires will go a full turn then lock up and then they go a full turn and lock up and the rear end works great when in 2wd

sounds like the gear ratio is different front and rear,tires all the same size?
If you want to check the ratio,just mark a spot on a tire ,roll the truck till the mark goes a full turn
while counting the number of times the driveshaft spins,should be the same front and rear.

When engauged it wont lock in front wheels with the front jacked up it acts like a clutch is slipping in the tranfercase

It probably is the clutch used by the Auto-4WD mode. Excessive use of auto 4WD will burn up the clutch.

Will it work in 4HI?

My 07 gmc yukon xl is stuck in 4wd drive. the stabitrak is off and the traction control is off. could i have blown a fuse?

you may have a look to the front diferencial,try on the locking pin that is on aside,check on the conector if there is signal,and there is locking and unlocking whit the control panel on the tranfercase,there is a module on the tranfercase,check that to for signals( ) and (-)

2004 jeep liberty front suspension seems to lock up front tires while making a turn WTF????????

Sounds like the tires are hitting the wheel wells. THis is Deadly.

Do you have oversize tires on the Jeep? Is your front axle drive engaged? Is it slung low to the ground like a low-rider? Any of these can cause 'lockup' in the front end when turning. If not, I would have the U-joints, CV joints and drive linkages checked.
