Self check is that the ABS light must come on and off after the engine is powered. If you find the light to be ON, then it can be related to fault in the system, it can be fault in any of the wheel sensors or the wiring or it can be dirt accumulated.
Might need assistance to get this check systematically solved as it relates to a safety issue.
If there is dirt accumulation on all the wheel hubs you can try with a power water wash.

One of the wheel speed sensors may have failed.

Abs and brake lights on

Thats a big possibility. The abs light is on telling the driver the abs system is disabled. And the regular brake light could be on because the parking brake is not released.

2001 gmc jimmy abs light staying on... Is there an abs breaker and where is it located?

No breaker. Inside the under hood fuse and relay box there is a relay and fuse. You need to take it to a shop and have them scan for the reason why the light is on. That way you don't throw parts at it until one of them fixes it.

Is there a brake safety fuse that shuts off the engine when the abs light comes on? i have a 94 dodge grandcaravan

The ABS would not shut off the engine, I suspect something with the engine is causing the shut down (fuel pump, or other things) and the ABS light gets triggered during that event.

ABS Problem in my 2000 Jimmy 4x4

the best way to diagnose this problem would be with a scan tool while driving and watching the speed sensors, or check all your wheel tone rings make sure there are no cracks and they are clean, also have the computer scaned for abs codes there should be a code that may tell you which wheel speed sensor is acting up,you can also check the wiring, these seem to chaf the wiring by the control arm .a bad wheel bearing may also cause this problem, i would start with a scan of the abs system, good luck.

I have a 1997 gmc jimmy. the abs unit locks up between 7mph and 5mph and the brakes stop working.

There was a recall on the ABS system on your truck. The problem was the ABS sensor on the front wheels were getting dirty and corroded causing a faults signal to the ABS module. The fix was to inspect the ABS sensor and clean them with brake parts cleaner and re-gap the sensor to the speed ring on the hub. The ABS sensor and speed ring is on the inside of the front wheel hub, spry brake parts cleaner and re-gap the sensor to the speed ring with paper folded 5 times. I feeler gauge will work but put a paper between the sensor and gauge cause the sensor is magnetic and the gauge will stick. Look for damages to the lead wire to the abs, but i think that's all fine since you did not mentioned any abs light on. You may be even lucky with just a good spray of the brake parts cleaner. Good luck and keep me posted.

2001 Jimmy ABS and brakes lights came on

I hate to say it, but the abs control module might have died on you. Thats the boxy looking thing under the hood that has a lot of brake lines and wire connectors going into it. I have seen this happen before and it ended up being one of the speed sensors on the wheels but usually its the module. Take the truck somewhere to get the light scanned, and that will give you a better idea of what it is.
