Ok one major question! Will changing the tcc solenoid in my 01 cougar fix the o/d flashing and make the car go forward when I try to drive it?

P1744 & P0720 which is the best route to fix this

No. replacing the TCC or the OSS, will not make the transmission work. You can unplug these transmissions and they will still work, less OD. Sounds like you may have stripped the torque converter oil pump gear. Common in these older Mercury/Fords.

    When you start it up. It will make a whining noise. When reved up the pitch will get higher. This is the transmission pump rod spinning in the converter. I know the sound. But there are other parts that can make the same sound. I use a stethoscope to locate the sound. If it is up at the engine /transmission mounting, it is the converter. Further back is usually planetary gears. Either way the transmission has to come out. Once out drain the converter. Hold it on it's side and look in the hole at the back. You will see the washer/gear is stripped. replace the converter. Many times you can get extra life from the transmission. If it were mine and I wanted to keep it(the rest of the car is good) I would rebuild the transmission also. But,I rebuild them. Cost to have it built, About $1300+, you pull it and put it back in.

P0720 - Insufficient input from Output Shaft Speed sensor The output shaft speed sensor inputs a signal to the PCM, based on the speed of the output shaft of the transmission. The PCM compares this signal with the signal of the VSS or TCSS and determines correct tire size and axle gear ratio.

  • OSS sensor circuit short to GND
  • OSS sensor circuit short to PWR
  • OSS sensor circuit open
  • Damaged OSS sensor
  • Damaged PCM
Verify sensor signal output varies with vehicle speed.

    P1744 TCC TCC The PCM picked up an excessive amount of TCC slippage during normal vehicle operation. TCC slippage/erratic or no torque converter clutch operation. GO to Diagnosis by Symptom. The P0720 is the concern i would address first . But both codes sould be diagnosed before replacing parts . You best bet is to take to a transmission repair shop that has the diagnostic tool to fix it. The codes do not suggest replacing parts , testing the cicuity ,electrical inputs to the control modules etc..

    Do you know how to test electrical circuits ? An you would need a diagnostic flow chart . No you do not need a new transmission . At most a couple of sensors or wiring repair or a contorl module .

I have a 2000 lincoln con and driving down int feels like car slips to neutral but my rpms drop way down and then back to normal after a second or so but car feels odd. code p1744 tcc stuck off.

You have to code set for the TCC so now you have direction for a fix.Use a good scan tool to check on the TCC condition and related control of it.

Do i really have to take the whole transmission down to replace a tcc solenoid on my 01 mercury cougar? It drives good and shifts all gears but i rather try the solenoid before buying a new used trans

The TCC is the Torque Converter Control and yes, it is inside the transmission. You may be able to drop the pan on it and get to it but that is rare.

This code has to with the TCC - Torque converter clutch
P1744 TCC TCC The PCM picked up an excessive amount of TCC slippage during normal vehicle operation. TCC slippage/erratic or no torque converter clutch operation. Refer to Diagnosis By Symptom in this section. You'll need to pull the transmission out an replace the torque converter ! Your better off taking to transmission shop an having a proper diagnosis done !

2002 ford escape v6 with trans code p1744 and 741

Unfortunately, the possible issues are numerous. The problem is most likely either your torque converter, or electrical issues with your transmission. Without knowing how the vehicle is acting, if it's drivable, when it trips the codes, etc, it makes it more difficult to accurately diagnose.

Here is what ford says about those codes...

SERVICE PROCEDURE
The torque converter clutch may not engage if one or more of the following conditions exist:
- Stuck converter regulator valve
- Stuck solenoid regulator valve
- Stuck bypass clutch control valve
- Stuck pressure failsafe valve
- Pump bore ring groove depth incorrect
- Worn pump shaft or damaged pump shaft seals
- Pump shaft internal sleeve loose (rattles)
- Turbine shaft seals damaged or missing
- Incorrect Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid
- TCC solenoid mechanically stuck or electrically inoperable
- Damaged internal wiring harness
- Incorrect gear ratio (wrong sprockets)
- Damaged or worn stator support
- Worn torque converter hub bushing
- Torque converter clutch worn or damaged
Use a scan tool to monitor the following PID's:
- TCC = Commanded duty cycle for TCC solenoid
- TCCMACT = Actual slip across the TCC, measured in RPM
- RPM = Actual engine speed
- TSS_SRC = Actual turbine shaft speed
- TCCRAT = Speed/Gear ratio of torque converter/transaxle

01 Buick Century Custom with a 3.1L . I have a code po741 or p0741 it says the troque converter circuit is stuck on what can i do to fix this .

P0741 TCC STUCK OFF If the PCM detects high converter slip when the TCC is commanded on, then a DTC P0741 will set. The following conditions must exist for two times during the same ignition cycle. This code will set for all the same reasons that a P1870 will set: • The TCC duty cycle is greater than 50% • The TCC slip speed is greater than 180 RPM for 7 seconds • TCC slip in 3rd gear on 4L80-E transmissions Known causes for P0741: • Worn TCC valve bores in the valve body • Damaged or worn pump bearing seal • Defective TCC PWM or TCC apply solenoids • Restricted separator plate solenoid feed orifice • Defective converter • Computer reprogram • Channel plate sleeve & turbine shaft sealing ring damage I would suggest changing fluid and filter & reset pcm.

P1744 enginge code tcc solenoid circuit

DTC P1744 is "TCC - Excessive Slip Detected During Full TCC Engagement". Which means that the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) is disengaged or the EPC pressure is at the minimum.

The most likely cause is a sticking or bad TCC solenoid inside the transmission. You can check the connector at the transmission to make sure it is clean and tight and that it is not damaged in any way.

If the TCC and wiring is okay, then pressure testing of the transmission will need to be done.

A new torque converter from Ford is about $265.00 and about 4 hours labor. Throw in a $40.00 TCC solenoid and I don't think it'll be more than $700.00 at worst.

If the pressure test is good then it's just going to be the $40.00 tcc solenoid and the cost of the transmission oil and filter changed which should be around $150.00

Good luck and hope it's just a loose wire harness to the solenoid which would cost $0.00 and just your time to locate the break in the wire. The other thing to, is to add a transmission fluid additive that would restore the clutch pack in the transmission and Torque Converter.

I have a code 741 on my 01 saturn S- series any suggestion on how to fix.

check the tcc fuse under the hood mfuse block if thats good,,,its most likely the tcc solenoid inside the ntop of the trans,the dealer has a test they can do to see ifits working,if its not the tcc solenoid which im sure it is,its either a wire issue or a pcm,i would go for the tcc solenoid
