Why does my kia sportage 1997 model doesn't start when the engine is hot but it's not on overheat mode engine? it's an R2 diesel engine.

indicates that the starter is suffering heat stress for proximity to an exhaust system
That stress can be from a failing starter motor or it needs a high torque starter to over come the heat problems ( a problem suffered by many ford falcon XD models )
pull the starter and have it bench tested / overhauled by an accredited auto electrician, check for recalls or service bulletins that suggest a heat shield be installed or ask for a higher torque motor that will overcome the problem

My kia sportage uses diesel, after driving a while and turn the car off, it is hard to start.

how long since the glow plugs were tested?indirect injection engines still require glow to start allbeit less, time, when hot ,just a quick test ,give it a small squirt of starter fluid in the air cleaner [with the filter out ] if it starts strait away then bet your booties it needs glow plugs. i will bet mine without doing the test-------- good luck

2000 kia sportage will not start have replaced fuel pump

unplug ecm connector engine control module has faulty connectors due to pins I recommend to unplug and plug connector and try to start, module is located under passenger front seat frontal foot area you need to remove a cover before you do the actual disconnection touch the door striker to rid your
self of static electricity. also check relays for fuel pump and ecm power on right side of engine compartment (as you would sit on
driver seat) (buy kia relays) and for danerl p possible faulty ignition
coils and spark plugs due to arking, replaced spark plugs wires too, check valve cover for leaking oil into spark plugs possible codes po300 -po304 set .
