Started to make a funny noise ,when i try to start ,and wont start now .if it is timing belt that broke ,will it have bent the valves
While there are discrepancies with the databases that people keep referring to, I've owned 3 escorts so far. Here's the bottom line:
1991-1995 Ford Escorts have only used 2 engines. They are as follows:
1.9L SOHC Ford. This is an interference engine and is the most common of the 2, found in over 90% of all 91-95 Escorts. Known problems include catastrophic damage due to dropped valve seats typically resulting from overheating, though this has occurred even without overheating. Catastrophic damage will also result from a snapped timing belt due to valves coming into contact with the pistons.
1.8L DOHC sourced from Mazda. This is the BP engine, a non-interference design intended for use with a turbocharger. Ford only used this engine in the Escort GT and Escort LX-E. It was also used in the Mercury Tracer LTS, Mazda Protege, and Kia Sephia.
I looked at interference engine list.
Ford engines
1.8L--1.9 L and 2.0L sohc are not interference engines. I can only go by the database info.
SOURCE: 1999 escort zx2 timing belt broke
The ZX2 Zetec is a non-interference engine. This means the valves are not capable of touching the pistons at any time. If your belt breaks, there will not be any valve damage. There are reliefs cut into the top of the pistons that allow clearance for the valves if the belt breaks. Most engines are interference and will cause several hundred or even thousands of dollars of damage when a timing belt breaks. Most shop manuals list the ZX2 as interference but it is not. Many people seek out this how-to because a mechanic has informed them that they have valve damage and quoted a repair price over $1000.
SOURCE: 1994 1.9 the timing belt broke.did it bend the valves.
For what it's worth, my info tells me it's a non-interference engine, so your o.k. but I will double check that & get back to you.
SOURCE: If the timing chain breaks on my 1996 ford Taurus will it bend the valves too?
The car would not start if the chain had broken, pure nonsense
The plastic guides may be worn & the tensioners gunked up
Chains seldom break,belts break
Did your mechanic do a cylinder leak down test
The more I read questions on this site, the more blessed I feel,
that I never in 49 years, needed professional help, they don't
do much & very well at not much
The mechanic should have a data base to know if it is an
interference motor, not tell a customer things that upset you
& speculate
Look up the info & test,do something positive, like actually
road test a car with the customer driving
If they don't do that I would run
