Question about 1998 Dodge Ram

1 Answer

Why is there an extremely loud hissing sound when I drive it?

Sounds like it's coming from underneath. Someone said a clogged catalytic converter.

I replaced my driveline recently and it still kind of" bounces". I leak transmission fluid bad and have to constantly refill it. Fixed the leak problem but could it be coming from transmission because driveline doesn't spin smoothly?

SOURCE: 98 Ford Explorer engine/exhaust noise

When catalytic converters go bad, the porcelain matrix inside comes loose and is noisy.
But you can just unbolt it, break up the loose chunks, pour out the pieces, and it will run better than ever.
If you don't pass the next emissions test, then replace it.

But it could just be the heat shield rattling instead.
Take the shield off first, to see if it goes away.

A loud knocking noise form the catalytic converter sounds strange, unless it was somehow damaged. Hard to say if it was the shops fault but maybe when they jacked the car up someone bent the catalytic converter. I'd take a peak underneath the car and see if the catalytic converters are damaged. It's possible that the belts are too tight and are wearing out the bearings in the pullys, but that wouldn't impact the catalytic converter. You might want to take it to another shop for a second opinion.

Radiator cooling fans

i would assume more than likely that your exhaust is clogged some where more than likely the catalytic converter is clogged unbolt the exhaust pipes from the manifolds and let the car run for awhile (it will be extremely loud don't drive it this way u get pulled over) if manifolds dont glow replace catalytic converters and inspect rest of pipes for clogs
if manifolds still glow you more than likely are running way to rich check fuel pressure injectors etc.

Possible catalytic converter is plugged causing exhaust to exit through a more frontal hole or spaces between exhaust components or gaskets between exhaust sections.

When I press the gas pedal hard and it downshifts sometimes it gives a loud hissing type sound and feels like the clutch is slipping. I have the automatic tranny and the 3.0 on my 02 spyder convertible.

Thanks for using Fixya.

One of the most common complaints with automatics is fluid leaks. Fluid can leak out of the driveshaft seals, the input shaft seal, the transmission pan gasket, the torque converter or the ATF cooler and line connections. If the fluid level gets low, the transmission may be slow to engage when it is shifted into drive. Gear shifts may be sloppy or delayed, or the transmission may slip between shifts. If the fluid level is really low, the transmission may cause the vehicle to not go at all. I hope this helps.

Thanks and have a nice day.
