To replace the starter motor on a vr/vs commodore is pretty straight forward I would recommend you do it by using these steps .
1.Position vehicle on hoist or on safety stands
2.disconnect the battery
3.when under the vehicle on the passanger side rear you will locate the starter motor .
4.remove and disconnect all wiring connected to starter .
5.there are 2-13mm bolts that go through the bottom of the starter into the engine block once these are removed you will be able to wiggle and work the starter out
follow these steps in reverse and it will all workout .
6.position starter motor in location
7.start the bolts to hold starter in position.
8.connect and securer wiring to starter .
9.finish tightening bolts up in starter.
10.connect battery
all is good finished

Have I damaged my power steering unit or anything by overfilling the reservoir in my 1997 GM (Australian vs commodore). The motor was briefly started but sounded terrible , before noticing the overfull

You probably did not damage anything, damage is more likely to occur by a dry reservoir than otherwise. However, see a service agent asap to check up the PWR warning light.

Hi my 95 model vs commondore would not start, charged battery it wont windover and makes this clicking noise.

the clicking noise is from the starter motor not getting enough charge to wind over properly...check battery is holding a full 12 volt charge.
if commodore is manual - put it into third gear and get someone to help you rock the car back and forward (with handbrake off and ignition off of course)if starter motor is 'jamming' this can release it. ive seen many bush mechanics hit the side of the starter motor in holdens with a hammer to release it also.( with an auto this is your only option.)
other wise if battery is proven to be good - go to the wreckers and buy another starter motor.

Check the starter swich for failure to return to on position. If ok check starter itself. The benix can lock onto the flywheel if bushes are bad.
