Where is the ABS hydraulic unit located? How do I check if the pumped is dead? I heard if the master cyclinder dies the abs pumps will burn out? Why is the ABS warning not on?
Something is wrong with your statement
it is a 99 caravan 3.3 no abs , then you are on about abs light pump etc
the abs pump only works when the master cylinder is under pressure and that pressure is suddenly reduced by the sensor reading a locked wheel and a valve is opened to release line pressure to that wheel As soon as that wheel starts to turn, the valve closes
while the wheel is stopped and that valve is open , the abs pump kicks in to maintain line pressure otherwise the brake pedal would go to the floor
master cylinders work through a. abs unit and not because of it so if the master cylinder becomes faulty, the abs pump will not operate until a wheel stops turning as there is no line pressure to stop a wheel turning
the abs light may not be on because there is nothing to operate the system to put it on
Testimonial: "Thanks Bill I'm tring to learn why it's not working."
a good method here is to get a workshop manual and read how it operates( any part of the vehicle for that matter) as each section has a principle of operation , how it can be repaired, tested and it's relationship with other parts
The best part of doing this is when it comes to having it diagnosed , you have some idea of when you are receiving an ear full of Bull***t
I can't seem to find any thing about diagnosing the ABS system myself. I have a Haynes manual I have used for 30 years but not much help with ABS. What manual do you suggest Bill. If I have to go to the dealer I would like to know more information first. So that don't BS me. In 30 years I have fix all my cars by asking questions on the internet. On a third car I can take my time fixing it. Thanks for any help. Mike L
I am inclined not to agree with you statement. Many efi cars have a low oil pressure
and or low oil level sensors system and when the oil level or pressure drops to below the parameters set, the engine light comes on and the engine is set into limp mode or just
shuts down
It appears that you are interested in searching for information and to this end there are publications on the market that deal specifically with sections ( abs, stabiltrac, brakes etc) of vehicles
they are available from places like autodata or shops that deal in auto technical publications
there is one on abs systems and covers all of the abs systems in use
I do applaud you for wanting to find out as much as possible before going into a shop as many mechanics are just parts replacers and will B/S to get the job ( well that part didn't
fix it so we will try this , then that until we fluke the fix)
That is why I recommend only accredited specialist shops and in this case a specialist brake shop with experience on your make of car and if you are even half conversant with the principles of operation you will recognize B/S when you hear it

Bill, I have a Haynes Manual but it didn't help. Can I get codes if the abs light is not on? Mike L
any problems with sensors, pumps or item controlled by the ECM will leave a report of a fault in the ECM
that report will not necessarily trigger a light as that is considered important enough to warrant immediate attention
I have found that haynes manuals sometimes lack important details and that gregories are better although inferior to genuine manuals
I am not familiar with who make caravans ( chev or dodge) but when I went google and typed in ---wiring schematics for 1999 chev caravan--- there are pdf pages versions for down loads
I never tired any other make but am confident that similar pages will be there
all you will have to alter is the chev to what make of car it is
Bill, could this be the same as a low oil warning light comes on at start up but doesn't stay on then the engine blows up because it ran out of oil? No ABS warning light and no abs brakes
