How do I read the TransAxel Oil Dipstick when the entire stick is red

After idling vehicle for 10 minutes, I check the trans axel oil. I understand the range should be read in the "hot" area of the Dipstick. However, the entire stick is covered in the fluid leaving me to wonder what the purpose of checking is at this point.

Hi David, Did you wipe the oil off the dip stick 1st before you read it

Testimonial: "Yes. I wipe the oil off the stick and place it back in its station. I repeat the process a couple minutes later. I am under the impression that the entire stick should not be wet. If such is the norm, I am uncertain of what the purpose would be for having a defined range for the "hot" check."

Not sure. I have not had a transmission service in well over 80,000 miles. I also have not added the trans axel oil. Thanks for the response.

Why would the transmission blowback from where you put the transmission fluid in

The most likely scenario is that it is foaming or is overfull.

Are you checking the oil level when the motor and trans are warm/ hot, the car is idling on a level surface? If you are adding trans fluid when the car is off and cold you are very likely overfilling it . If you are checking the oil level when the vehicle is idleing and warm and it is still blowing out of the dip stick tube , then check what the transfluid looks and smells like. It should be pink to light red and not smell "burnt".

Let the vehicle cool off, ( overnight) . Pull the stick and see if there is anything on the stick. If not, add fluid until it is just on the tip of the stick. If when cold the oil is on the stick, has a good appearance and is any where near the fill lines proceed to next step. If the oil is above the fill and full lines it is overfull and will foam up in operation. The excess oil must be drained.
Start the car and allow it to idle until it is warm. Pull the trans stick back out and see where the oil is on the stick. When warm and idling it should be in the area between add and full. if it's over those lines when warm, it's over full and needs to be drained to the correct level.

If the oil has a milky appearance it is contaminated with water or other substance; you need to take the car for service. It is likely the coolant from the radiator and the oil cooler for the trans have been leaking by contaminating each other. Both systems will need to be completely cleaned and the source of the leak will need to be fixed before the car is used again.

What is the purpose of oil cap on valve cover

That is where you put the oil when you are low on oil or when you an oil change. When you open the hood you should see a oil dipstick. Make sure the car has been off for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Have a clean paper towel and remove the dipstick. make sure its the dipstick if you have an automatic transmission. trans fluid is red in color oil will be golden to dark black depending on how often you change the oil. wipe the dipstick off and at the end you will see a full mark near the end. Replace the dipstick back into the tube you removed it from and pull it out again, check the end where it says full. If there is oil up to the full mark your good, if not add oil through the oil cap hole in valve cover top. re-wipe the dip stick and check to see if full. Add oil as needed. If you keep up with your oil changes as required depending on the oil requirements. 10w30 regular oil is every 3,000 miles. Castrol synthetic oil is every 21,000 miles. Use a good oil filter. Consult your auto parts dealer.

WE DRAINED 2 1/2 LTRS OF OIL OUT DURING AN OIL CHANGE AND PUT 2 LTRS BACK IN, ITS NOW SAYING ON THE DIP STICK THAT ITS OVER FULL, WE EVEN TOOK THE SUMP PLUG OUT AT THE BOTTOM AFTER THE ENG WAS WARM BUT NO...

Could be that it needs to run, if you changed the oil filter also, you removed a full filter and put on an empty one. Could be that the often-present-on VW's plastic ring on the dip stick tube is broken, causing the dipstick to more fully insert. Check the specifications. Was the car parked differently? Uphile or downhill will cause a different reading, perhaps the before reading was inaccurate.

How do I check the transmission fluid on a 2009 Dodge Journey with the 3.5 liter engine. There is no transmission dipstick.

below is info from the owners manual. I do not have a repair manual, but you may be able to buy one that would say how to check the transmission fluid on the 3.5L. It sounds like they don't expect you will need to check it.

Fluid Level Check - Vehicles with 3.5L Engine

The automatic transaxle has no dipstick and is dealer

serviced only.

Fluid Level Check - Vehicles with 2.4L and 2.7L

Engines

Use the following procedure to check the automatic

transaxle fluid level properly:

1. Park the vehicle on level ground.

2. Run the engine at curb idle speed for a minimum of 60

seconds.

3. Apply the parking brake fully.

4. Place the shift lever momentarily in each gear position

ending with the lever in PARK.

5. Wipe the area around the dipstick clean to eliminate
the possibility of dirt entering the transaxle.

6. Remove the dipstick and determine if the fluid is hot

or cold. Hot fluid is approximately 180°F (82°C), which is

the normal operating temperature after the vehicle is

driven at least 15 mi (24 km). Hot fluid cannot be held

comfortably between the fingertips. Cold fluid is at a

temperature below 80°F (27°C).

7. Wipe the dipstick clean and reinsert until seated. Then,

remove dipstick and note the reading.

a. If the fluid is hot, the reading should be in the

crosshatched area marked "HOT" (between the upper

two holes in the dipstick).

b. If the fluid is cold, the fluid level should be between

the lower two holes in the area marked "COLD."

If the fluid level is low, add sufficient fluid through the

filler (dipstick) tube to bring it to the proper level. Do not
overfill.

How do you check trans fluid for an automatic?

You have to find the TRANS dip stick with a handle or looped metal rod. Most times it says TRANS on top. The other dipstick says OIL. You might ought to check that also. The owners manual will tell you or ask someone who drives the same type vehicle where to find it. Crank up the car in park, remove the dipstick, wipe it off, stick it back in the tube, pull it out and look closely at the bottom tip for red oil on the scale there that will tell you the fluid level. If the fluid is black or dark and the car still runs get a filter and fluid change ASAP. Do it every 30k miles and you may save yourself an expensive rebuilding of the trans.

WHERE DO I PUT THE TRANSMISION FLUID

you have to locate the tranny dip stick and pull it out- then get a funnel that will fit down the hole- and slowly pour in tranny fliud. check level by putting dip stick back in (allow time for fuild to drip down out of the tube) make sure engine is running and is warmed up while reading fluid level on dipstick. Make sure it is the tranny dip stick and not the oil dipstick. oil is usually yellow and says oil on it- Trans is usually red.
