Foamy transmission fluid on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. What is the cause? I have checked both the radiator and the transmission fluid for signs of coolant and fluid mixing. I found no signs.

The governor pressure sensor is the most likley cause however an inspection of fluid or debris in trans pan would be a good idea to make sure there's nothing excessive in it. Attached is a list of possible causes however the senor would be the most common.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • Powertrain control module
  • 5 volt supply circuit open
  • Check transmission fluid level and condition
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to voltage
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to sensor ground
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to ground
  • GOV pressure sensor signal circuit open
  • Sensor ground circuit open
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to voltage inside transmission
  • 5 volt supply circuit open inside transmission
  • Intermittent governor pressure solenoid
  • Internal transmission problem
  • Oil burnt or oil pan has excessive debris
  • Other transmission DTC'S
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to sensor ground inside transmission
  • Valve body
  • GOV press sensor signal circuit shorted to ground inside transmission

SOURCE: I have 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and it is leaking coolant

Front drivers side could be a bad cap, lower hose or the radiator itself. You need to look carefully and find the leak source. Steam travels and isn't a good indication of where the actual leak is coolant will run down and take any path it can to reach the ground. Therefore, you need to follow it back to where it is coming from, then deal with it. Your water pump can also leak and run down the lower hose. there is a small hole in the pump behind the pulley. If you see coolant coming from there the pump needs to be replaced. Sealers will not work on hoses or pump leaks so don't bother using them for that.

SOURCE: describe how to change transmission fluid and

Assume since you say filter it is automatic.

Before starting the job obtain the fluid and filter for your vehicle. The parts store can provide you the right kind and amount of fluid based on Make Year Model. Also obtain new gasket.

Transmission must be cool.
Raise vehicle on jack stands.
Locate the fluid pan. Remove the side and front bolts.
Place a drain pan under the transmission capable of holding 8 quarts (two gallons).
Loosen the rear pan mounting bolts. Fluid should start to drain around the pan at the front. If not the pan is stuck. Pry it gently at the front with a flexible putty knife.
Once fluid is draining you can eventually take the rear bolts all the way out and pour off the balance of fluid.

Clean the gasket mounting surface on the transmission.

Clean the fluid pan completely.

Remove the old filter. It will be held with screws (bolts).

Install new filter.

Assure surfaces are still clean. Put new gasket in place, and install pan, tightening the bolts (screws) gradually until correct torque for your transmission is reached.

Take car off jack stands.

Add the correct amount of fluid for your vehicle through the filler tube. (Parts store can look this up when you are there).

Start with engine in park. Maintain idle, don't race engine.
Shift to each range setting, and then back to neutral.

Watch for leaks - if occur will need to repeat the procedure but the filter can be left in place.

Foamy transmission fluid on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. What is the cause

Dear Jon,
The problem should be inside your radiator.
The transmission has a separate cooler mounted inside the radiator to cool the transmission fluid.
This is accomplished by having two steel & rubber lines that run from the transmission to the radiator and return.
If the cooler inside the radiator gets a hole in it, it will allow coolant into your transmission, since the radiator pressure can exceed the transmission pressure.
You will need to service both the radiator (replace it) and the transmission (flush it).
To neglect to do would will "burn up" the transmission" and can "blow up" the radiator as well.
The vehicle should not be driven at all until this is repaired.
It should even be towed to the garage.
God bless your efforts.

Foamy transmission fluid on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. What is the cause

The usual cause of that is overfilling. If you are sure that isn't so, change the fluid for a good synthetic ATF of the right type for the vehicle, eg Castrol Transmax or equivalent

A less likely possibility is that the transmission vent is blocked

How does one add transmission fluid to 1995 jeep grand cherokee laredo?

Look for the dipstick where you check the transmision fluid level. If you need any you pour it down the dipstick hole. Add it in small amounts and check in between additions, its really easy to overfill. Once overfilled a real pain to get it out.

Does the coolant reservoir to overflow tank need to be full for 1996 jeep grand cherokee 6cyl 4.0l gas vin s laredo if it is empty will it cause radiator to over heat.

It should have the level maintained in it as marked on it. If it is empty it will not cause over heating (it just holds the extra fluid) but a leak causing a low coolant level, stuck thermostat, clogged radiator, bad cap or improper pressure will.
