1992 5.7 cranks no start

I have fuel and spark timing is good still won't start

Plenty of compression some said try new rotor and cap could be cross firing?

  • Terry Hair Jul 18, 2016

Funny you should mention that. If the distributor cap has the coil installed inside it and you are required to swap it from the old cap to the new cap, it is possible for some caps to have an issue where the screws that secure the coil to the cap may protrude slightly into the inner area of the cap, causing what seems to cross-firing, but actually you are sparking to ground. I had to get a new cap and put washers on the screws to keep them from breaking thru the inside of the cap. I figured it out when I looked carefully at the inside of the cap and saw the carbon tracks fro the arcing.

Assuming you are correct, then the only two things still needed are air and compression. As long as the air filter and air intake is not completely clogged, you have air. Perform a compression test to ensure that there is sufficient compression to support combustion.

Cranks well but won't start.

Looks like you got spark, and gas in the throttle body made it fire: nice work.
Sounds like your fuel pump is out or the wiring is not turning it on. One way to be sure is to set a spare battery near the tank and hot wire the pump with jumper wires. Or if you have a voltmeter check for voltage at the fuel pump connector while the truck is cranking.. If the pump is working and getting gas to the engine, see if the injectors are pulsing. A good idea to check fuel pressure if the pump is working.

92 dlx tercel, cranks fine, won't fire. No prior start issues in 17 yrs.

Igniter usually. You need a few things. Do you have fuel? To the carb not just in the fuel tank. And do you have spark? Check all plugs. Turn car over with a plug wire removed and see if you have spark otherwise you need to diagnose air intake or compression. Usually igniter if you have no spark.
Hope this helps.

1992 mx-3 v6 won't start. will hit sparaticly as if about to start but just won't catch. checked crank pos. sensor. need suggestions on how to proceed.

Check for a blue snapping spark on 2 or 3 plug wires(or all of them). If you get good spark, then ignition is likely not the problem. A weak or sporadic spark could be a bad coil or coil pack, or a bad ignition module (the ignitor).Check the coils with a volt-ohmmeter per the specs for your car. The ignitor can be tested at a parts store.
If spark is good, check fuel filter, fuel pressure, check timing marks on crank pulley and cam marks, Try a little starting fluid in the air intake and see if it runs for a moment. If so, then it's likely a fuel delivery problem. If no change, then it's likely an ignition circuit problem.
Good luck.

Won't start

hi Ben, you haven't given many details. Make sure you have fuel delivery and at the correct pressure. you'll need to have the fuel pressure tested by a worksop as special equipment is needed. At the same time have a scan carried out to find out if there are any fault codes registered. Regards JohnJohn

Car stalls after A short drive and wont start and run for only A few seconds also runns rough

After it stalls and won't start check for spark and fuel. If it is missing spark, check the crank sensor and the ignition module. If it has spark check the resistance of the injectors.

92 cavalier 4cyc. with coil pack cranks but won,t start checked fire has none

if the car crankes and wont start there are a few things you need to have for it to run. spark fuel and timing. check for spark at plugs. check for fuel preasure and injector pulse. if these are o/k then check engine timing. if everything is o/k then you probably have a major vacume leak.
