  1. NOTE: The generic electronic module (GEM)/central timer module (CTM) must be reconfigured upon replacement. Refer to the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester help screen on the configuration card to program the Tire Size, Axle Ratio. The power windows system and rear window defroster system are (GEM) controlled systems.
  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the power windows system or rear window defroster system.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.

SOURCE: 1997 mercury mountaineer cigarette lighter

http://www.genuineservice.com/genuineservice/en/default?page=genuineService

Go to this website and pick owner guide on left task bar. Input vehicle info then get the owners manual.Your fuse panel info starts on page 120.

To replace lighter just reach around behind it and unhook connectors. The stick something in the socket(I usually use 2 fingers) and twist it counter clockwise. the center will screw out of the sleeve.

The inside door handles are plastic so the chances are you need a new one. To get to it you have to take the door panel off and than you will see

SOURCE: 1997 Mercury Mountaineer speedometer stopped

Sounds like a broken cable. The cable runs from the rear of the speedometer to the gearbox/transmission. Sometimes the cable can come out of speedometer but not usually on it's own. If you have done any work on or behind dashboard then you may have dislodged it. I would check there first.

97 Mercury Mountaineer driver side door won't open. Outside handle flops around; inside handle won't open door

Try a slim jim first, down the side of the window. Or AAA or locksmith. If no luck, remove the seat first. Find the screws and bolts around the door handle and arm rest. Most Ford's have screws around the outer side of the panel. I don't believe your's does. The panel lifts or pops off. Once the panel is off, you can reach down and open the door. Just a note. I have done some to where the panel came out in pieces.
