I would like to know, do I use tranny fluid or gear oil, what viscosity and amount is required?

SOURCE: Refilling transmission fluid - manual 5-speed.

dextron mercron 3, automatic transmission fluid. Mostly standard on fords and others for both auto and manual trans. Underneath the air intake pipe, at the rear right hand side there is a 4 prong plug for the speed sensor. Its electronic so there wont be any cable, its a round sensor with a horizontal plug on the end of it. Take a flat head screwdriver and pry the 2 holding prongs off the wiring harnes. then get a #10 socket 1/4in drive with exstinsions works best take out the bolt going right with the rachet. once you get it out just pull and twist the sensor out. It seems to be easier with a hose at the end of the funnel to pour the fluid in. stick the hose where the speed sensor was. once its full just assemble it back the way it was.

SOURCE: My 98 Escort ZX2 manual transmisson seems to shift gear hard!

Clutch may be smooth but this is a sign of the clutch needing replaced. Some of these models have a linkage adjustment under the hood. Others are hydrallic and need fluid. Look under the hood where the steering is and see which you have and address accordingly. Good luck. Check on costs of clutch replacement.

Transmission fluid

Manual transmissions take a heavier gear oil instead of transmission fluid which is mainly used in automatic transmissions. Go to any auto parts store, ask someone to help you select the right one.

I've been working on my 2001 Ford escort zx2. I dont know alot about cars so my neighbor was helping me. i was removing my radiator to do some work on my thermostat (tapping out one of the stripped screws)...

Buy a Haynes manual for $15 for starters. Remember that coolant systems also have tranny cooling functions too. They needed to install them because the trans are getting cheaper and cheaper (this ain't the old days) and keeping the fluid cool is important. I've worked on a 97-98, but they aren't that far apart despite the P-engine vs. DOHC. You might even have the ever present Check the Haynes (or Mitchell or AllData - the Ford Dealer will probably print you a page or two for free on this so you can see how things are looped) - and you can get things put back together. You didn't say auto or 5 speed, but I suggest you check out the MANY devoted forums to Escorts and Ford Focus. Your answers likely lay there as well.

1989? When was the last time the Transmission was drained and new Transmission Fluid (oil) put in?
This Fluid (oil) loses viscosity and get particles in it causing additional loss in viscosity. I would go to even having the transmission drained and FLUSHED (cleaned) and new Fluid (oil) put in. Recheck the operation.
Boyles and Charles Laws are applicable here: (P*V)/T. Heat causes the Fluid to Heat and Expand (in molecules) but because of the limited sealed volume (transmission case) this increases Pressure allowing the smoother shifting and placement into gears.
Change the Transmission Fluid (oil) and have the Transmission Flushed (cleaning the insides) and your problem should go away.

Where is the transmission level check plug on a 2001 ford escort zx2

If it is a manual transmission you will have to removed the speed sensor from the transmission. Fluid should be at or near the top of the gear on the sensor.

Manual Transmission fluid for Ford Escort ZX2

I know this sounds crazy according to Ford:

You can use-
Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX MERCON® Alternative Transaxle Fluid - SAE 75W90 Gear Oil F32Z-19C547-MA API GL-4
You are seeing that right, one instance they call for 75W90 and the other it is ATF. It is ok to run either, 75W90 will give you smoother shifts and less noise.

This transmission is filled through the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) hole.
