I have a 95 Mazda Protege that has been sitting in my garage for over a year. Recently i put a new distributor in it, and it started first time. When I went to shift into drive, the shifter won't budge. All of my fuses are fine and my brake lights work. The lock button on the shifter unlocks when I depress the brake and the shifter itself seems to unlock from its original position, it simply won't move into any gear. I've also tried to put the key in every position, depress the brake all the way to the floor, there's even a small hole next to the shifter that allows you to depress the brake lock( which I can see and hear works fine.) Besides the brake- shift lock mechanism, what else could it be? Note: the shifter worked fine when we pushed the vehicle into the garage, could it be that the wheels have somehow locked up?Can I force the car into neutral just to get it out of my garage?
