I need to know the year and if your 4X4 is electronic or manual shifter.
Most older 4X4 Toyotas have manual hub lock.you will find on the hub lock and unlock position
there may also be a button or switch on the dash to engage 4 wheel if not then once u engage shifter and turn lockouts to lock put truck in rev and backup about 3 to 4 ft this should engage your 4 wheel
im not sure if a 2000 f150 and a 2000 f250 have the exact steering column, but incase it is then check at the base of the column inside and you may see a triangler shape bracket that the shift cable connects to,there will be 2 torque screws holding the bracket to the column, either a t-20 or t-25 not sure, they may be loose so the shifter will be sloppy...my 2000 f150 had that problem and i stumbled upon it,it seems to be a 2000 year issue...about the manual hubs, try locking them in and drive forward and reverse very slow a few times,if they lock in then they are sticky and it takes time for the spring inside to push then together.lock the hubs in first, then after a while shift to 4x4,because if they are just sticky,it may strip the teeth on the lockouts from the axel turning against the inside of the lockout.
if you have access to a lift put somone in it sent it up
start it up put in 4wd low and check to se if the
output shaft is turning from the transfer case to the
front difirential if it's not turning odd's are transfer case problem if it is turning listen each front hub for
grinding noise if there is check the offending hub
by the way if you can't use a lift find some level paved
ground and use 4 STURDY jack stands to do tests
hope this helps any other ? just ask. good luck
sticky or broken lockout ,take apart and clean, inspect the center aluminum piece,if the center moves around alot then the lockout is broken,if not then regrease and try it again
Your automatic locking hubs are broken. Very common on ford trucks. The front hubs are geared with hard nylon gears, and are easily broken. If you replace your front hubs with "warn (name brand)" manual locking hubs, your issue will be resolved, and you won't have that issue again on your truck.
If you replace the hubs with manual locking hubs, you will have to stop, get out of the truck, and manually lock in your hubs every time you want to engage your 4 wheel drive. It beats getting stranded somewhere with no 4x4 at all; like you have now.
If you replace your hubs with the factory automatic locking hubs, the issue will return again in time.
if u got automatic front hubs stop put in park pull 4x4 shifter into 4 wheel
manual hubs at front wheels turn the hub locks to the lock position and then pull the 4 wheel shifter inti 4 wheel
also look over drivers sun visor if the tag aint worn off the direction are there... have fun 4 wheeling and keep the rubber side down
