Check the crank/start fuse. Also check to see if the security light is on. Reset is 10 minutes on, 30 seconds off, then start. relearn is 3 times this, start after the third time, for security. If still no start, check the wire going from the ignition switch to the starter.

jack up thecar and put it on stands, disconnect the battery the starter is behind the radiator on the rear of the engine, remove the two bolts that hold the starter on, then lower carefully not to pull the wires apart, disconnect the signal wire firle the the main, just reverse to install

i have a 97 cavalier and i have 5 wires that connect to the starter but i dont know where 1 of them goes

First disconnect the ground (-) post on your battery then you will need to raise your car off the ground high enough to get under it to remove the starter you do not need to lift the engine it has two bolts holding the starter to the engine they will be near the trans at the head of the starter .
Disconnect the wires with a 8mm wrench and a 13mm wrench then remove the bolts holding the starter.
It sounds like the solenoid has gone bad which is on the starter
once you have gotten the starter replaced go to your nearest chevy dealer there may be a open recall to have a relay installed in the wiring to your starter to prevent the solenoid from burning out again

could be a loose wire on the starter , check your connections

It sounds as though the solenoid on the starter is stuck. if it is a used starter a light tapping with a hammer may release it (very light). DON"T tap it if it is a new or rebuilt starter you may void your warranty. If it is a new starter it should have a warranty. If installed at a garage call them for warranty repair if you installed it yourself pull it off and take it back for replacement. Most places I deal with for starters and alternators, either new or rebuilt have least a 1 year warranty. mike
